.22lr rifle

Hi Guys. I am seriously thinking about a .22 rifle.
I have the Henry survival but it's not a whole bunch of fun to shoot.
I am looking at a supremely viable 10/22, but i've seen AK's in 22 (ca legal).
The rave a remington at the range i go to which is nice too. what do you guys think of the .22 versions of some of the battle rifles? please bear in mind i live in cali. but i'm pretty sure pistol grips are allowed on 22's.
thanks folks.

EDIT: i'm trying to keep it at less than $300 +tax and DROSS but i'd be willing to hold on a bit longer and save more

many tacticool looking .22's are 10-22's with replacement stocks and parts. If you don't have a 10-22 I would suggest one. they are pretty accurate and can be customized with highly available aftermarket parts like no other firearm except perhaps the AR style rifle. speaking of which there are some .22 dedicated uppers and rifles available. I am unsure of their reliablity but would likely be out of your stated budget.

The Ruger 10/22

has emerged as a real platform for customization due to the massive aftermarket parts situation from a large number of sellers.

Note: really spend some time thinking out what you want to do and keep track of the prices as costs can get out of control before you know what is happening.

Second note: No matter what you do at least get a real trigger for this gun on the aftermarket.

NEVER BUY A Ruger 10/22!!!!

You can make a better one yourself out of parts!!! LITERALLY!!

Find the stock you want...whatever style you like.

Get a Green Mountain target barrel...or whatever precision barrel you prefer/can get in Hell/Kalifornia.

Get a Voldquartzen action/bolt/guts...nobody does it better.

Get a Riflebasix trigger...or any other brand you like.

TA DA!! You will now have a prefectly working PRECISE rifle that will OUTSHOOT anything Ruger's lazy Microsoft-Vaporware-Wannabee-Bastiches have come up with since the the late 1960's.

Yeah, I said it. RUGER is making SUBSTANDARD weaponry so people can UPGRADE...they're following the Bill Gates Business Model...make barely functioning junk, but make sure there are plenty of Aftermarket accesories!!!

I can't post the cusswords that I feel about Ruger or Microsoft...I'd get booted.

Stock 10/22's don't typically shoot that great. I have one. They are just not as accurate as some of the other choices. Most of the AR looking 22's will likely shoot about as good as the Ruger 10/22 however. Not a lot of experience with them, but I have been looking at them myself, in particular the GSG-5 and Colt.

For a good all around 22 semi-auto rifle, the Marlin Model 60 is hard to beat for the price. They are typically more accurate than the ruger 10/22 out of the box. Not as many after market stuff for them as compared to the 10/22 however.

I don't know CA laws well enough to comment about pistol grips and so forth on 22 rifles in Calli.

Hi big shrek

I am so with you on Bill Gates and Microsoft.

As soon as we can afford it we will switch to Apple thus making us totally able to avoid both Vista and Win7.

I am always amazed so many people keep going with Microsoft's parade of new systems.

What about the metal receiver housing?

(That is the "Gun" for BATFE purposes.)

What brand and from whom?

Well, i don't know much about guns (but i'm learning, thanks to you guys), and I don't know much about PC's. I have had a Mac laptop for 6 years. it works. simple as that. no viruses, no real problems with it. the big issue with mac is (in my opinion) they are overpriced. for the same money you can get a way better PC (well, not the same money, much less). on the other hand, with a mac you don't need to configure drivers or really know what's going on inside. IT just works.

beware though, a mac is the first step to eating tofu.

Hey, I have the GSG-5 and the Colt/Walther M4 .22. I find both to be accurate reliable rifles and loads of fun to shoot. However, you could buy 5 10-22s for what I paid for these two guns. I have held, but not shot both versions of the GSG AK .22 and the wood one is more appealing to me but costs 40 bucks more than the plastic version. One note, the GSG-5 is no longer going to be produced or sold since ATI/GSG lost the copyright lawsuit with Heckler and Koch. My Colt M4 took about 500 rounds of CCI mini mags to break in fully until there were no more light strikes, FTEs, or FTFs. It now will shoot almost anything but Remington ammo. The GSG-5 did not require any breakin at all. both exhibit one hole accuracy at 25-50 yards with the iron sights.

The GSG-5 will continue to be sold under license from H&K. They will cost roughly double what the ATI is selling for now.

Big Shrek, thank you, I will fully take on board what you have posted. I don't think I'm at the stage of custom building my own rifle just yet.
I'm not looking to make this thing 'supremely viable', just a nice inexpensive rifle to take to the range.
part of it is I have buyers remorse from my henry ar-7. i'm sure it's a good rifle for what it was designed for, just not a bunch of fun to shoot, and is very picky about ammo.

so I'm just looking for a good reliable .22

Marlin 795's go for around $150 new. They are semu auto .22s, reputedly more accurate, and more reliable than the ruger 10/22. They are not tubefed like the other marlins, you load them with a 10 round magazine. They are very lightweight and easy to carry through the stix

Volquartzen They have a LOVELY receiver housing that has an intergral Pic rail. Not to mention the cool radial fluted barrels...

Heck, just buy a whole rifle from VQ...

Tell Ruger to go blow a Goat

https://www.volquartsen.com/category...uger-semi-auto

I traded my 10/22T for a beat-up old 1981 Yamaha XS-400 Special II...it runs better than the rifle
I sold my pair of Ruger Vaquero's and bought a Grendel R-31...which shoots more precisely than the 10/22T...go figure.
NO MORE RUGERS!!

I'm MUCH happier now

Academy Sports sells 'em for $129 in my area

Lately I'm trying to find a Marlin model 70 (predecessor to the 795) so I can fiddle around and see what's different between the 70 & 795

My next NEW purchase will probably be a Chiappa 1911-22, .22lr pistol

Even the wifey digs this one

Volquartzen's are located just a few miles from my home town. I went to school with the owner's son. They make a killing on their rifles. Quite the nitch market they have found.

well Gentlemen, after much thought and talking to gun owners at the range and in the stores I did go with the 10/22. (although I'm now planning to start building another based on Big Shrek's advice). I just brought it home tonight after to stupid 10 day wait.

do I have to give it a full cleaning before I fire it? and is there any particular round I should use? I have a bunch of CCI mini mag, remmington golden, some winchester bulk, elleys, oh, and some armscor.

Thanks folks.

I use the CCI mini-mags in mine plus it also likes Wolfe target match, and winchester wildcats. and yes always clean a new rifle before shooting.

Hehehe, just buy a Marlin 795SS for around $205 or the regular 795 for $129 and you'll have something that'll outshoot most tricked-out Rugers

Then get this stock to put on it for $24.25 at Numrich
Marlin 70 Rifle Ramline Non-Folding Lockarm Stock*|*e-GunParts.com

And if you really wanna...a Heavy Target Barrel for $47.90
MARLIN | 70HC | ITEM#1035540 | e-GunParts.com

Don't forget the Marlin Rebate...$20 back on all 795's

I think you made the right choice! Here in CA, even the lowly .22 guns are just now slowly deflating in price. Big 5 even had faux banana clips recently (10 rounders that look like 25 rounders)
