Petrol i was not trying to say you needed one. I was pointing out that if you are actually willing to hustle for work you probably would not need a government phone. therefore this program is unneeded I can see subsidizing landlines for the elderly but free phones for those on welfare to me is simply stupid. I am an able bodied person if I need a phone i work and get money to pay for it. if I don't want to work i should not get a phone

I know someone that has one of these and they live in a place where there is no landline and both of them work minimun wage. they only use it to call schools and receive calls from work they don't have enough minutes to do anything else. What people need to realise is that their really is poverty in america. come to johnson county and go to a place called flat gap and you will see things that you wouldn't expect in Somalia. not all welfare is bad.

The argument could easily be made that internet capabilities are just as important as a cell phone.

Why should they get it? I have to work for mine, do they? But wait, I have to pay for that one too?
Make them go through the same process all unemployed go through, go on job interviews to keep their phone, and all the other freebies. If you stay in that system, you don't have to pay, you just VOTE they way they want. Don't forget to call those happy headed friends to keep the business.
What they are used for is the key here. They should be put in the security net to make sure.
If you want to help people, hand them out to to runaways, homeless, emergency situations. They can track them too and rescue people from tragedy, not help create tragedy.
The transference of wealth Baby, who do we send the bill too? All for them, non for us.

The old plan:
the government must provide (at tax payer expense) for the basic needs of those who are unable to provide for these basic needs (food, shelter).
The result of old plan: number of people who can't provide for basic needs increases
The new plan:
The government must provide (at tax payer expense) so that everyone has everything anyone else has in order for the playing field is equal and no one has to feel bad that they don't have something.
new plan is justified by making everything a basic need (phone, computer, transportation, ect. ect.)
Result of new plan: The american tax payer becomes tried of working and having their money taken to provide for everyone else. the American tax payer realizes that it is better to just stop working and let government provide at tax payer expense....oh wait no more tax payers to rob.......

A 60 minute card for Tracfones is $19.99. They are getting this per month. I guess it's an easy way to make some drug deals so they can afford to by more minutes.

I am not saying it is justified in any manner and certainly I agree it is a monumental waste of taxpayer money.
However, Obama received a huge block of votes from the welfare and very low income population so it appears to be a sort of thank you and remember to vote for me again deal.
