I inherited a K-38 mod 14-2 from a family-friend who was a retired police officer. Included with the gun was his receipt dated 1965 which reads in handwriting: "K-38 Target, Douglas 6" Bull BBL, Hurst grips, Target hammer, Special double-action trigger job, new condition" (he was obviously not the original purchaser).

I have a question about the hammer - it doesn't lock in the cocked position. I figure that this was an intentional modification, but I don't understand its purpose, so I haven't taken it to the range. My guess is that he used this gun for target practice/competition?

I'm new to the forum and relatively inexperienced when it comes to firearms.

Any thoughts as to why, or cautions / special considerations regarding taking it to the range?

Welcome to the forum. The description of your revolver having a double action trigger Job leaves me to believe the trigger has been Modified and perhaps the sear has been filed on way too Much and it seems the shooter wanted a double action Mode weapon period removing the single action sear on the trigger. It should have a New trigger Installed by a Competent Gun Smith or the existing one checked and filed so it does stay in single action mode Placed back in it before firing it. That way it will be safe for you or anyone around you while shooting it. I hope this helps, Hammerdown

Welcome to the Forum. Have a gunsmith check it out before you shoot it. HammerDown has got great advice. It is the trigger and somebody messed with it or it is THAT dirty. have a gunsmith check it out. BE SAFE!!

If your Gun Needs a new or replacement trigger, You can find them Often on Flea-Bay. Make sure you ask the seller if it has been filed on before Bidding as you don't need another Bum Hammer. If you are lucky some will often drop in and work correctly without the work of fitting them. I have swapped several out on my S&W revolvers and most will drop in and work if the revolver was made Post 1960 and Later which your gun is of later vintage. I have a good standard style seratted trigger I could send you for $20.00 that should drop in and work in that gun if you are Interested Just PM me your name and address and we can go from there.
