It certainly sounds like a new barrel would be an excellent choice for getting out all of the accuracy you'd need for hunting.
Unless you reload, I'd definitely go with something other than your current chambering... With long ranges being a frequent occurrence in Colorado, you may want to look into .270, or .30-06. I'm personally a major fan of the .30-06, but .270 is absolutely 100% capable of doing what you want and need it to do.
