Hello to the forum,

Living o the western slope of Colorado where 300 + yards is the norm I need some advise on a rifle. I inherited a pre-64 Winchester model 70 in .264 magnum. I shot it as a kid at everything and did not care for it as well as I should have. It now shoots a 4 inch group at 100 yards.

I want to accurize it. I'm thinking a new barrel in a longer length, even 34 inches.

I wonder if I should have it re-chambered, and if so, to what caliber?

It certainly sounds like a new barrel would be an excellent choice for getting out all of the accuracy you'd need for hunting.

Unless you reload, I'd definitely go with something other than your current chambering... With long ranges being a frequent occurrence in Colorado, you may want to look into .270, or .30-06. I'm personally a major fan of the .30-06, but .270 is absolutely 100% capable of doing what you want and need it to do.
