Finally got the windage issue straightened up on My Inland Carbine. (and didn't lose a single case while I was at it)
I think the Carbine would be a great gun for short range hunting of some of the bigger varmints and small game animals in the bobcat to small hog size range. Bet some guys in Texas are using it for whistle pigs.
Anybody got a game favorite reload they'd like to share?
I'd like to scope this carbine without having to drive out the rear sight and the Ultimak base that just replaces the handguard looks like just what I need. Has anyone used this? Got a critique of it? I've got an excellent condition, old Weaver K4 that's itching to be put on a good old rifle.

I have the ultimak look at my pics, but if you want to put a traditional sight on it, the relief will be wierd...
And you may need to remove some material from the stock to allow the barrel clamps to fit.
I usually have a Truglo Red dot sight with a 2x on the rail but I took it off to clean my rifle and havent put it back on

So, mounting the Ultimak base involves a little more than just replacing the handguard, eh? If I have to whittle on the stock, that's really not going to suit me any better than driving out the rear sight. I might just scribe a witness mark across the dovetail to make re-zeroing easier if I ever need to.

The only thing I have to say on that is you wont be able to use your iron sights if you need to...and being able to use them is always a good thing no fussing with trying to put the rear sight back or anything just pop off the red dot and back to the irons
O what is the rifle under the enfield in your pictures? I dont Recognize it.
I got a beautiful Type 38 Arisaka with the Mum, early type battlefield pickup. I did some research and I got the manufacture date and its before the War so the steel and machining is perfect not hastily thrown together.
The forward scope mount is worth the trouble. To answer your load question, I used the Speer 110 gr SP and WW296 powder. That bullet is designed just for the M1 carbine and works well.
Sierra 110 gr sp and win 296 powder. Maximum load as published by lee. Work up to max it is a little hot. I am using this load for deer this year. Just went hunting last week and every deer I saw was under 100 yrds. Lot quicker to get that little carbine up than my 06.
AOM1Carbine, that's a MAS 1936 in the picture. An Arisaka is on my "to get" list.
So, soft points perform OK at carbine velocites? Has anyone got experience with HPs (other than the factory load mentioned above)? H110 powder, since I already have some on hand? I'll use the gun in pursuit of coyotes, bobcats, and small hogs.

I use H110 and i think the loads match that of Win296 and personally i'd go for remington 110gr sp just because i can get em cheaper. only thing i've learned with the H110 is if you go light on it you get soot in the face and a few crunched cases that don't make it out of the action all the way
H110 and WW296 are the same powder. For deer use the soft point. The Remington bullet is designed as a varmint bullet and will only give about 6 in penetration. Its a good self defense bullet.
I wanted to keep my iron sights and the Ultimak worked out perfectly for me. I had a Long Eye Relief scope that I took off a pistol so the 2 worked together great. If scope gets damaged I can take it off and still have iron sights zero'd for 100 yards. That's my solution
Jim
I think I'm going to keep my carbine iron sighted for now. I didn't have as much H110 as I thought, so I loaded up my Sierra ProHunters with IMR 4227. I'd like to get some Speer hollowpoints and see if they'll feed.
