I was lying on the couch and we (family) were watching TV. I thought I heard the doorknob being turned (everyone else heard it too), HARD! I told everyone to be quiet as I muted the TV, I keep my .380 with me at all times when I'm at home. I got up and headed for the front door and someone WAS shaking the doorknob to get in. I racked a round and they must've heard it (It was loud) because I seen the shadow stumble and run in a BIG hurry IMMEDIATELY afterwards through the frosted glass next to the door.. I opened the door quickly with sidearm in hand and heard the bushes rattle (About 30 yds from my front door) and running footsteps. Man, this neighborhood is going to crap. It used to be a good one, but times are tough and people are taking chances they wouldn't otherwise. I don't want to shoot anyone, but this incident pissed me off.

Glad everything ended without incident. Stay just as alert as you were this time. I hope you filed a police report. They may already have an idea who it is and will know to keep an eye out for him.

I'm glad to hear that you and your family are ok. I think as more and more people lose their jobs, we will be seeing more and more crime happening all over...
You can always move back to "Point Pleasant" and drink a few "Little Kings" and watch the Barges go by on the Ohio River..We'd be glad to welcome a "Buckeye" back home...

Wow its scarier still when you think about it, it sounds like this happened during evening hours possibly?
A time when people know that folks will be home and not away at work or school. It doesnt take much to see if someone is in fact, home. looking into windows or hearing people talking or the TV going.
Glad to hear everyone is ok.
PS...
And people think Im strange cause I carry my glock with me even when Im home. Its like any other piece of clothing.
There was somebody messing around in my back yard (shortly after midnight) a few years ago. I snuck outside and waited a while and, sure enough, they came back. I worked my way around behind them and shouted "Stop or I'll shoot!". One ran like hell but I tackled the other one. Turns out it was a couple of 15 year-old troublemakers out vandalizing the neighborhood.
Maybe next time I should actually be carrying my pistol........

I had something happen like this about 15 years ago when I still lived with my parents. My dad used to work nights so my Mom used to sleep on the couch in living room sometimes so he wouldn't wake her up when he came home a 4am. Anyway, at about 2:30 am someone knocked on the front door and started messing with the handle etc. My mom being grogy went over to the door and begain to let them in thinking my dad was home and had forgotten his keys. But it wasn't him. As soon as my mom realized that she slammed the door and started screaming for me. She was knocked down to the floor when I came down the stairs with an 870 loaded with 5 shots of 3" 00 buck. It turned out to two teens about 17 years old who were all kinds of drunk and looking for a party that was down the street. I held them at gun point until the police arrived. My mom ended up with 15 stitches from the door hitting her in the face when they pushed the door back at her. Those two were very lucky they stopped when I told them too. If they hadn't the would have been dead.
The real scary part about this is I was almost arrested for brandishing. Only the fact that my mother was already injured saved me from a trip downtown. Thank god for Castle doctrine, which wasn't around in Minnesota then.

I would in a heartbeat if it was practical to do so!
Archetype: I don't think my heart rate increased by a single beat.
Tacav: Indeed! Around 8pm.
SightNsqueeze: No, no police report and I stay in a constant state of yellow alert. .
Rambo: I never thought of that little benefit! :P
They most likely weren't from around here as unlike most neighborhoods out here, everyone is armed. Casing my place would be real tough too. someone is always home on my court and I come and go unexpectedly, VERY unexpectedly! I think I made mention of pulling a "Crazy Ivan" now and then in another post. I'ts such a habit that I make it very difficult for anyone to pick out a pattern of habit. Thanks to all for your concern.
The only thing I would had done different where I live is...I would have shot the ground a few shoots to let the Perp know he's makeing a fatal mistake if he were to try it again.
Glad everyone is O.K. Thats why I bought a HD shotgun. That short barreled dragon follows me like a puppy where ever I go in my house, just about...A.H

Thanx, The only time I'll pull a trigger is if I'm going to kill "it". I'm not the type to fire a warning shot. (waste of perfectly good ammo )
I think we can all agree that criminals are NOT the sharpest marbles in the bag! Them trying a door knob in evening hours, with lights on in the home, and TV going, tells me they were prepared for someone to be home (that were probably armed), but not prepared for that "someone" to be armed as well.
You were lucky they decided to run. It could have been all kinds of ugly, even if you had prevailed in a fight.
PS I carry a gun at all times in my home, as well.

That is pretty much the same encounter I had in Norfolk last year. Good to hear the man was a coward and didn't give you any more trouble than a headache.
