Kinda hard to figure what sparked it. They're gobbling up cats and dogs in the burbs around Tulsa like there's no tomorrow, but I haven't heard of any people encounters.

I wonder if she was by herself ? You get that impression, though other hikers were around and saw the coyote.

Were they rabid? Never heard of coyotes attacking folks unless they were injured and down.

That's pretty sad. Fortunately we don't have coyotes in my area (yet), but since I'll be out deer hunting this year with an AR, I'll have an extra 30 round mag in the pack just in case.

There are several coyote attacks each year in California and other states where natural food is getting scarce. They typically are not fatal however. Coyotes are vicious animals. Don't let their size fool you. If they are in a pack they will attack humans. It's always a good idea to carry while out alone in the wilderness.

The article clearly states it was a pack of coyotes. I suspect there may have been some dog blood mixed in from people who drop dogs off in the wild or let their dogs run free. Coy-dogs are far from coy. Even full blooded coyotes are accustomed to being around humans in many areas. They are not uncommon in suburbia. Their range is increasing as they find human activities to be a nice food source.

Packing behavior can be seen in domestic dogs that are allowed to run free. The personalities of the animals changes completely when in a pack. They can do incredible damage, then return home to their people and act like the perfect little pet. Packs of dogs are a real and growing threat in some inner city areas.

A pack of coyotes would be like a pack of small size wolves. They do not need protection. They are increasing in number and range and are becoming more and more of a problem.

No doubt that this was a fine and talented young woman, and it is a saddening story; but when will people learn that the coyote, and other critters, are not Disney characters! If you go into their domain, you should be suitably armed and trained, and preferrably not alone. Even then, an attack may be difficult to ward off.

good friend who lives on Prince Edward Island, Ca traps alot during the winter, he has told me of '' super coyotes'' . Seems that coyotes and wolfs have made a larger hybrid by inter breeding.

We've got a den of coyotes in the far corner of a corn field right behind my house. We've never seen the adults venture towards the houses (or at least they haven't let themselves be seen) but i guess the pups don't learn so quick because i've seen the pups wandering around the houses and at the nursing home parking lot right across the street from my house.

It is sad that a person was killed by Coyotes.

I think people underestimate what a coyote is capable. I have seen very large coyotes in downtown Milwaukee. They are crafty and very adaptable. I hate them.

If I were you I would put poison out near that den. Then lie in wait with a high powered pellet gun. That is if firearms are not permitted. Even bowhunting them would be great sport.

As a child, I lived in a home just outside of a town in South Texas.

I went to sleep almost every evening listening to the Yips and Yaps of the coyotes.

But, I rarely saw one during the day. I saw packs of Javelinas often though.

I remember you could turn in a pair of coyote ears for $70 down here too.

I see 'yotes occasionally around my house. I live on the outskirts of a small town. I suspect there are more around here than the average local thinks.

I also have seen bear scat in my yard and one passed through while I was washing my car a couple of years ago.

Some idiots on the road behind me have been known to feed the bears.......

not my field so i'd rather not put poison out there and be responsible for anything other than a coyote showing up dead in it.

firearms are legal where i live (outside of town, in the township), and we even still have the old farm laws on the books that say you can shoot even a dog if it comes onto your property, so i think shooting a coyote if it came around would be no issue.

It'd give me an excuse to get out my new .45-70 and see what it does against something living, rather than those immobile milk jugs

I have lots of coyotes in my area. My wife keeps putting out scraps for them even though I have repeatedly said she shouldn't and may someday pay the consequences. I printed the article and maybe this will convince her! At least my neighbor shoots them when they approach his house. I don’t like killing any animal that doesn’t threaten me but if need be I will.

Cutting alfalfa hay in Oklahoma it was not unusuall when you got down to the last few swipes the coyotes usually 2 would show up to snatch the young rabbits up and they were not afraid of the swathing machine. My boss would not allow me to carry a gun to kill them and when we found a den with pups he would call the trappers in to live trap them and relocate them.I guess when you have 10 coyote hunters come into your yard and corner a coyote in your coral and kill it it would make you that way, they would also cut fences chaseing them and the cattle would get out also. But I have killed all but a few that I seen when I was not at work. They are about as large as I have ever seen them here in Tennessee and are about inbetween the size of normal coyote and a wolf,so much cover there is no time to stop and get out and shoot and then they are gone. Two of them could take you out if atacked and unarmed and even then if armed you might not make it.Sad for the lady, could have been rabid.Heard of hunters calling them in haveing one sneek and jump right in on top of them and bobcat also.
