Another good source are used tire weights. I'm sure your local tire shop would be happy to give them to you as they are considered hazerdious waste and can't be dumped in the trash so the probally would hand them over. My buddy use to have one of the propane stands meant for deep frying the turkeys he use to use. he got an old cast iron pan at a gargage sale for a buck and rigged up a wooden handle for it. he would dump the used tire weights in the pan until they started to melt and then pick out the metal tabs. Then he would pour the melted lead into the molds for the fishing weights he used. Pretty neat.

Yes they are still made out of lead except the clip that holds them to the rim. Some shops might not give them up because they might have someone paying them for the weight of the lead. Some shops do reused them but it is not good pratice. When you remove the old one from the rim you have to bend the metal clip to free it from the rim and it will not fit tightly on the rim if you reuse it. No shop I ever worked at reused wheel weights. It is not worth the .10 cents you might save only to have the weight fall off the rim and have to rebalance the tire agian for free.

Last time I had my tires changed and was waiting for them to get done I was just hanging around the outside of the door where they do the work and looked down and saw a bunch and just started picking a bunch up. Ended up with a baggie full. lol

So next time you're getting tires changed, just look around...

Lot of good it does me as I don't have anything to melt the lead or mold into bullets. lol

a simple hotplate will melt the leadand i think it won't stick to grass so if you have a butter dish you could use that to make a lead brick mold.

lead

Before anyone thinks they want to use old dead car batteries as a source of lead, please read the bullet casting websites for their warnings about doing this. It can be very hazardous to your health. I have a tire dealership I have been going to for 25 years and they know me. Just in the last month I have gotten almost 300 lbs. of used wheel weights from them for free. They told me to come by every two weeks or so and they will have a 5 gal. bucket full for me.
