They IMPROOVED the original Stoner design to take a beating like an AK-47.
It's already been adopted by two NATO nations & is under studies by the DoD to replace the M-16 & M4.

shrek, no matter what Heckler & Koch have done to Stoner's design the HK-416 still has the major failing of the Poodle Shooter:
it shoots 5.56 NATO Poodle Shooter ammo. The military has been playing with that cartridge for 40 years and it's still not powerful enough to guarantee it will do the job. Further, it still leaves our troops with a weapon whose reach is not long enough for work anywhere outside the jungle or in parts of the urban environment.
As I've said before, to hell with the HK-416. Heckler & Koch have also built a 7.62 NATO version of the gun called the HK-417. If this new, expensive German evolution of Stoner's AR-10 is in fact worth anything, let's dump the Poodle Shooter-chambered version and go to one chambered for a cartridge that will give our soldiers a better chance of killing the enemy than the varmint cartridge they are presently using!
