Springfield 745b by savage?

My dad just received an old shotgun from my grandpa that was his dads and it looks like and old browning copy that is marked Springfield 745b on the receiver and savage on the barrel. There is no serial number on the shogun at all. Does anybody know much about these shotguns or if they are safe to fire modern steel shot through.
