Just wondering how many people here volunteer with the shooting sports for kids & if so which groups.

I volunteer with the Boy Scouts & Venture crews & with a local shooting club in their youth rifle program. I would volunteer with the cub scouts but our council doesn't offer bb gun as of yet.

i dont through official organizations but i do instruct women and children on rifles and hand guns and women on shot guns and anyone on basic weapon and range safety.
i get asked all the time and am only word of mouth in my local area.
I did learn that children MUST be at least 7 years old if you are to let them handle ammunition at a range btw ( unless the ammo does not contain any harmful materials such as lead )

I helped with a merit badge for the scouts. I also donate several hundred dollars worth of fishing gear to our FOP for the "Hooked on fishing, not drugs" program.

I still am an Aisstant Scout Master and do mostly canoeing, orietering (compass and maps) and rifle shooting. "Shootsfest" is comming up again soon. Usually donate some 400 rounds of various calibers to blast. Many of these boys is and has been their only chance to shoot some "evil" black guns. Garands too

That's great that many do volunteer for the kids. Many kids don't have the opportunity to do alot of things. Keep up the great work.

Full Metal, how do you guys do your shootfest? Is it done as a scouting event thru the council or thru the local range or some other way? So far all we have been able to do here is going out with the troops or venture crews with only 1 troop or crew, I'd love to set something up as a council wide thing. Thanks for the info.

NO not thru council. Council will only reconize 22 and shotgun shooting. It's more of a social/pesonal outing. Shootzenfest, our name givin to the event after the first shoot. Two other leaders and myself just wanted for the boys to have a chance to shoot some centerfire rifles. Discussed it somewhat. Got approval at a commercial range to bring a "group". We have to go thru Their orientation also.
We had 3 gun safety and awareness meetings prior. (now 2 meetings)
Have had special guest from a colorfull local gunsmith, Civil War Reinactors, cowboy action type, Gun enthuesist with 3 - class IIIs, an NRA High Master/ Vietnam vet, National long range champion, and the three of us.
At the range we have 1 "qualified" adult for 2 shooting tables.
We have done 8 shootsfest so far and the range has exstended a welcome back, thanks to the boys good behavoir.
I, we do ask for donations and get back maybe 1/2 of what it cost us but it's for a good cause.
We also go to the shotgun range. Shoot 25 clays from 5 firing positions.
Also we did 2 shoots only with 22s to qualify the scouts for rifle merrit badge.
No other troop in area does the same thing far as I know. Then again we dont advertize it.

Thanks for the info on how you guys work it. I'm going to check with our local range if we might be able to get something like that set up.

I still have strong ties with my Boy Scout troop (I was one of the most respected Eagle Scouts produced by that troop) and I try to help them out when possible. Right now I'm working with the leaders to get some Venture boys over to the skeet/clay range to learn some basic firearms safety, practice, and etiquette.

You ask how many of us volunteer for the kids, yet in the eyes of many I'm still a kid at 19 years old. It's weird how the world works.
(That's just an afterthought I felt like posting, pay no regard to it if it bothers you.)

My aspirin bottle says KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN so I try but my Pastor is considering asking me to train the youth group to shoot since I'm there.

In my mind, doesn't matter the age, if you help out those that are younger your helping simple as that, BTW congrats on Eagle.

lol Dragunov, I'm not sure who has more fun the volunteers or the kids. Where abouts in Kalifornistan are you? I'm in Bakersfield.

I lve in Antelope, about 15mi. north of the Kapetol, MoKbaMento.

Yeah, I love kids, especially teens. They get ignored at a time in their lives when they need the adults more than ever. They're a lot of fun.
