Stock care

Hi, I recently aquired a Glenfield model 25 and its in pretty good shape. However, the stock looks like it could use a little freshing up. Looks dry and kinda....flat for lost of a better term. Is there a cleaner, wax, oil or paste treatment that I could apply to this stock to bring out some life and lustre? Being a Glenfield I think I remember reading somewhere the stock is birchwood.

I mentioned above a cleaner because it has some transfer (paint)on the butt end, probably bang against the wall or wood work when put back in a closet for storasge from the previous owner. In any case I need some good sound advice on how to remove the transfer an give the stock some life. Thanks.

Try a little WD-40 on a paper towel to get the transfer off then clean well with a soft, dry cloth. As far as a finish, I'd try a little carnauba wax and a lot of elbow grease to buff it out. For a quick and dirty method of getting a shine on it, you can use a little spray furniture polish on it.

I like useing F-21 by Turtle wax on my wood and synthectic stocks. It's like Armour All but better.
Put it on and buff it off ...A.H

Sounds like it might need a total refinishing...

You can quickly hand-sand it down to bare wood all over with Sanding Sponges in 15-30 minutes
(DO NOT USE POWER TOOLS)...and apply Tung Oil, it will bring out the beauty of the natural wood

The reason I say don't use power tools...most folks can't do it without messing up. Quite often power sanders will leave SWIRL marks...which create a whole new problem.

With sanding sponges, you CAN'T mess up.
