Just picked up a very lightly used marlin 30-30 today thats had less than a box of shells through it. It has a hammer block safety that i can't get to slide. I haven't tried hard as i don't want to damage the gun but was wondering if anyone of you guys have experience with this. Should i try to slide it or talk it to be checked out. i just wondered if maybe this safety sticks on new guns. Thanks

When in doubt, have it looked out. If you feel confident in your abilities, take it apart and put it back together. Look for wear marks.

about all i know how to do is take the stock off a bolt action and break down a single or double into it's 3 parts. taking apart a lever is beyond me. think i'll try it again and if it fails just take it to the smithy. i still want more input so feel free. thanks

do a google search for a replacement or faux safety for the marlin 1894 cowboy, one of the sites gives a detailed explaination of how to install their product and in doing so they tell you how to get at the safety and how it works, i'd assume the safeties to be pretty much the same as they're in the same spot, in fact if it was me i'd and the gun was blued i'd get the plug and ditch that safety and live with halfcock like our gun toting ancestors did before the lawyers took power

Just to clarify, are you trying to apply the safety with the hammer cocked or at rest?

As for disassebly, it's just about removing the screw that holds the lever on - everything should slide out the back.

Is it in the "Safe" position or the "Fire" position?

Are you sure it is the original Safety, and has not been converted to a useless button that eliminates the "Safe" position?

First, this should have been posted in the MARLIN section.

Second, did you clean it TOTALLY (first cleaning style) after you got it??? Quite often folks let gunk accumulate in the trigger/safety areas, which needs to be cleaned out.

The Hammer Block isn't so much a safety as a redundant system...

The above was my first thought as well. The safety must be applied when the hammer is on "HALF OR FULL COCK" It cant be pushed to "safe" with the hammer all the way down on the firing pin.

First, big shrek, i don't care where it's posted so long as i get my question answered.

Second, i figured it out and it was because the safety can't be moved with the hammer up.

Third, Thank you to the guys who answered my question, not chastised me about where this should or should not have been posted.

it has had less than one box of shells through it then there is a likelihood
it has some "shipping grease" remaining.

I suggest a good grease solvent liberally applied to your gun followed by drying then a touch of a light oil such as 3 in 1.

This often works on newer guns.
