He has been saving for a while, and since he is now on medical leave from work for 2 years, money is tight. I tried to get him to keep saving for an M&P, but he bought a brand new HP 9mm for $139.99 plus tax. This is his first semi-auto for him, but he has a couple of .38 revolvers.
Anything I should tell him to look for, quirks or possible issues? This is mostly just a shooting gun, not for carry.
Now to get together to shoot my M&P's against his Hi-Point. Might just make me stop making fun of them.

Some people say that the Hi Points have a break in period of 500 rounds or so and also suggest leaving the mag fully loaded for a couple of weeks. I have bought 2 pistols new and 2 carbines used. I bought a C9 9mm for the wife took it to the range loaded it 1 short of a full load and commenced to firing as fast as I could pull the trigger and never had a hiccup right out of the box. Mine have eaten everything I have thrown at them and come back for more. Out of the 4 I own I have never had any problems. As far as accuracy they will outshoot me everytime. For just a fun gun you cannot beat them. The C9 wouldn't be too bad for carry but the 40 and 45 are just too bulky and heavy in my opinion.
I know alot of people have nothing but negitive things to say about them. Those are pretty much the people who have never shot or owned one. I picked up the 9mm carbin really cheap and put the ATI Stock on it( I admit it, It was really ugly). I take it to the range with me now and It's just as reliable as my AK or SKS.
He called me to tell me he shot it for the first time. 1st shot high & right, 2nd lower & left, rest of mag went in the area of "if it was a person they'd be history". Then he loaded the mag and emptied it fast. Fired all the way through no problems.
Then he told his wife about the gun, since you can't return a gun after you shoot it. She said it was okay for him to keep it, but she wants me to show him and her how to shoot better. He is planning on making a trip to my area so we can go to the range and shoot for several hours. He wants to shoot my .22 pistols to get his technique down. I just want to shoot his HP.

I have an M&P in 9mm, 40 S&W Compact, 40 full size, and .45ACP. Why would I want a Hi-Point?
Because everyone needs at least one cheap BUG! C'mon the things are +P+ rated, don't have a magazine safety, and the gun along with a case of Wolf ammo end up costing less than the majority of pistols out there - what isn't to love!

He told me today that it came with only one magazine! I called Hi-Point and they said for the 9mm I can get an 8 round mag for $15 or a 10 for $18, shipping included.
Not bad, I thought.

The biggest, and really ONLY downside I see to the Hi-Point pistols is they're ugly. That having been said the ones I've shot have been pretty dang accurate. I'd rather have an ugly gun that shoots rather than a pretty one that's just nice to look at.

I've only shot the first HP's that was made - you know, the all steel one ton blocks.
I'll not knock them until I get a chance to fire one, and see for myself. I'm keeping an open mind also, which is hard for a S&W guy.
Me too, the old .45. Never, EVER, went through one mag of ammo without at LEAST one failure to load, and most of the time, several failures. My brother now has it and uses it as a single shot shark disposer when he goes fishing in the Gulf. Because once it did load, it never failed to fire. About it's only good point.
Hi-Point would had to change a lot before I would consider buying another one. But who knows----they may have changed a lot since I had it.

Just came back from the range and was shooting my C9 Hi-Point and my S&W Sima 9mm. I was shooting on the reactive range at 25 yds. I went through 130 rounds o my cast bullet reloads. I did have some that did not cycle on both pistols, but that was the ammo. I would say that I was hitting about 75% of the targets with both. I don't think that was too bacd for an old man who is blind in one eye and can't see out of the other.

TexasD hit it right on the head. HPs have a definite brake in period. My C9 was 250 rounds. Never had a problem with my 995.
HPs are fine low priced guns with a 100% unconditional warranty.
HP covers things you would not believe. Multiple owners. One guy lost his 995 in a trailer fire. Stripped it down and called HP for the parts needed to rebuild it. He was going to buy these parts. HP told him to box it up and send it to them. This guy then repeated the condition of the gun and what happened and all and they said again, box it up and mail it in.
He did and about 2 weeks later he got his 995 back. They took all the parts he salvaged and tested them to be sure they were still usable and then used new parts to rebuild the carbine. Sent it plus two free mags back to him. free of charge. Don't know any company that would do that for their customers.
HPs motto is 100% customer satisfaction and they mean it.

Sad but you are right.
I ended up doing just this. But alas I don't like single stack pistols. Have 1 1911 and 1 22lr semi-auto, both single stack. other than that all other pistols are double stack.
The constant reloading of the magazines just drove me nuts. So I no longer have my C9 or 995. But they are good guns.
