Scoping an 1886

Okay, I bought this beautiful 1886 Win ultralight .45/70 (a Win repro) and I love this rifle, killed a couple of elk and deer with it. Now I have contracted age related fuzzy sight syndrome :-( and I'm thinking of topping it with a Leupold 1.5-5. Any recommendations on mounts? It's drilled and tapped. (thought about just keeping it as is and getting a Marlin 1895 and scoping it)

I would keep the 1886 as is and get the Marlin & scope it. The 1886 would not look right with a scope on it. I owned an original 1886 in 45-70 and a model 71 .348 Win. which was an 1886 up-date. You would have to use a side mount or long eye relief "scout" type scope. Your choice of scopes is right on.

You may want to take a look at these scopes:

Well,

the idea of the rifle is that it is right for you. Personally, I would scope it
as you have already had success hunting with the rifle and are likely to once again hunt with it.

Should someone in the future have the rifle and wish to remove the scope that would be a move to meet their needs.

Personally, although the Marlin is a high quality product I just would not buy one for the desire to have a scope on a rifle.

Unless you have shot and like using an offset scope mount or long eye relief scout scope, one of which you would have to use because of the Winchester top eject, and neither of which I personally like, I would get a Marlin 1895 Cowboy with the 26" hexagon barrel and 9+1 mag. Mount your scope and you are ready to hunt any game that walks in North America.
