Model 74

My brother in law just called and said he has a Winchester Model 74 22LR. I never knew he had it and wants to sell it. I am tempted to buy it but it only has iron sights; my eyes don't like them anymore. It is an old gun, 1953 and kind of different so if we can come to a price I may own it. He did say they could not get it sighted in right. He said it shot to the right and I don't think he ever moved the rear sight sideways. Does anyone have experience with these? Good or bad?? Thanks

They are fine guns, wish I had one now. It's not hard to tap the front sight over just a smidge to the right.

Smidge

That's what I thought, either the front or rear could probably be moved. Thanks

I own a 22 short only and a 22 long rifle only. Both are very accurate and very dependable. The trigger pull takes a little getting used to though.

Dadgum gun makers just cannot make guns whose sights don't get fuzzy lookin' over time! Weird deal, the sights on mine all went fuzzy at the same time. I oughta sue somebody!

Look on the left, rear side of the receiver and see if there are 4 screw holes. If there are, then it will take a scope base. I couldn't tell you who makes the base but I have one. It only accepts a 3/4" tube scope but their still out there.
I have a 74 that I got when I was 8, given to me by an "Uncle" (grandfathers brother) right after he shot himself in the foot while loading it.
My gun isn't drilled but I didn't know that when I found the base at a gun show and paid 25.00 for it. Let me know if it's any use to you on your gun..... PM would be best.....

Nope

Brother in law/sister has three boys so one of them got the gun. I am glad since they will treasure it also. I was getting pretty excited about it but no hard feelings. Now I will probably have to find one for sale someplace else. Day late and dollar short????
