M16A1 Parts Kit from TSG

Well, for you AR and M16 folks, for what its worth to anyone, the Sportsman's Guide is selling these parts kits. I don't know anything about ARs or M16s, I'm a simple Mosin man myself seeing if this would be of any interest to fellow shooters and aficionados alike. But if anyone was interested:

Used U.S. Military Colt M16a1 Parts Kit, Shooting Supplies, Century Int'l Arms at Sportsman's Guide

But they wouldn't help unless you had a full auto receiver. Still pretty cool though.

Yep. The rear of it has to be milled out on both sides. Unless you have a milling machine or know someone who is willing to make your rifle illegal, it won't happen. Then you have to drill one more hole in it for the auto sear pin. That or you have to buy a Class III receiver. I haven't looked into them, but I'm sure they're very expensive.

If I bought that kit from sportsmans guide what would I need to purchase to make a legal AR 15. I assume the lower receiver and many or all the internal parts. Is there some site that will give me complete info about that build?

You must be new to this, so I'm gonna cut you some slack.

If you want a "legal AR15", go buy an AR15 kit. They're roughly the same price, and come with everything you see in the photo except for probably the bayonet.

The only reason to purchase that kit would be for the building of an M16. It's my understanding that the mere possession of the fire control group constitutes a "machine gun" according to the BATFE, and they probably wouldn't sell it to you unless you had Class-III paperwork.

^Not in all states. Here it's completely legal to own everything needed to make a fully auto firearm. You only have problems when they're put together. As for the kit, the only thing needed would be the stripped lower receiver. You would not be able to make it select fire without major modification to the lower receiver. You just leave out the disconnector and put a semi-auto safety in.

Really? I thought the BATFE considered the auto parts to be "the machine gun", and you were required to pay for the stamp...

Heck they still advertise the naughty parts for the AK's in almost every shotgun news. I would not have them parts around myself with todays thought police, etc running around.

The way I have understood the class III law is that the only firearms a civilian can own and be full auto have to of been made before the gun control act of 1986. You can pay the bucks $$$, get your stamp and convert as long as the firearm was made before the 1986 law change. The firearm from then on will always be a class III, no going back to semi-only. Law enforcement can still buy all the new builds they want.

I am kinda liking this M16A1 kit, alittle more $$ than some others right now but its pretty much all colt. Might have to stash acouple of these away.

Ok, so the M16 upper receiver will work find with a semi auto AR-15 lower correct? I will just purchase a lower receiver and a semi auto parts group. I have been through this with building an AK with a ful auto parts kit but I do not own an AR 15 and have no experience with them. I have a good sized collection militarty and vintage firearms and would rather have this parts kit that has history to it rather than if I purchased a new AR. Thank you for your help.

^Yep. Good luck with it! Great thing about it is, if you ever want a fully auto rifle, all you have to do if get your stamp and paperwork and pay the money. You wont' have to bother with finding the parts.

Yeah - I've bought some parts from them (not the full auto parts). It's my understanding that these guys require CLass III proof before they send you any of the forbidden items.
