Dumb-A Attack

As the thread title says I had one. Was showin the .45 to a friend in the parking lot and accidentally stripped one off into the chamber and didn't realize it. Well as you can guess I dropped the hammer on a hot tube and the gun discharged into the seat of my car but didn't puncture thanks to a CD Case that goes on your visor. Please tell me im not the first to feel this stupid and accidentally discharge your gun in front of a friend.

Just be thankful no one was hurt. Secondly, since you aren't in jail, I guess your buddy was the only witness & you aren't in trouble with the law. Could have lost your carry license.

A-wyo, a LOT of real experienced gunmen have done the same. You were obviously following one of the rules in that you cranked it off into your car seat instead of toward the road or the side of a building or your buddy. I've been in a lot of PDs and SOs that had pics strategicaly hung to cover a pock mark on the wall. Learn from it amigo, but don't beat yourself up too bad. (when I was 14 I blew the window out of my Dad's car because I didn't understand the magazine cutoff on a Browning Sweet 16)

When I went through instructor school many years ago our mantra on checking guns was "check visually (look in the chmber), check physically (stick your finger in the chamber)" No your finger won't actually fit in the chamber, but it emphasizes the check. A lot of folks who repeat a motion a lot get to where they "look without seeing". (that's why people pull out from stop signs and get hit by cars then tell you "yes I looked" "No I didn't see him"

Rule #1. Always keep it pointed in a safe direction.
Tied with rule #2 Always treat it as it is loaded.

It is easy enough to do. Just be glad it wasn't stuffed down the front of your pants.

And if it was a Glock you might want to consider a NY1 trigger mod. Cheap.

Keep safe.

No, never happened to me......yet. Hope to God it never does. But when I was alot younger......My Uncle went hunting with several drinks under his belt. And when loading his rifle blew a hole threw the side of his BRAND NEW TRUCK. What a drunken DUMB A$$$$$$$$$. Glad no one was hurt, don't feel to bad. Notice I said yet.....We all get a little over confident at times. Some of are lucky and the mistakes we make don't hurt anyone. You won't ever forget it either, and thats a good thing. Keep your head up, and powder dry.

Time to stop beating yourself up, give thanks no one was hurt and no legal problems. How soon do you think you'll repeat it?

Archetype, that was not an accidental discharge, It was a Negligent discharge and in almost every jurisdiction will get arrested. Usually that kind of thing only happens once in a persons life and you train yourself to check re-check and check again before pulling the trigger.
I'm glad you learned the lesson without anybody getting hurt. now get back out to the range practice.

And if there were a third to this, it would be: The best safety is always the one between your ears...

And like the rest have said, I'm glad no one was hurt and the muzzle was pointed in a safe direction.

Rule #3 - Don't play with gun in parking lot !

If you only put your finger on the trigger when you actually want to fire the gun , this will not happen to you again .

Think safety !

How do you inadvertantly slip one in the chamber? I know the concealed permit is new, but show and tell it isn't, and parking lots are not the best place. Lucky it was pointed in a safe direction. That friend will always remember that mistake and will never quite trust you again.

Archetype, first of all glad no one was hurt or killed and that no law enforcement was involved.Now....what the hell were you thinking showing a friend your gun in a parking lot and then a negligent discharge to boot. We:IE all gun owners including you know better then that.Dam man you might have made the news.Licensed gun owner shoots friend or little old lady or 6 year old kid in a Wyoming parking lot.Charges are pending. The man had recently purchased the gun and had a permit to carry.Field day for the press my friend not to mention you could have shot someone or yourself.I hope and pray you have learned a lesson and that you will learn from your mistake. With that said it took some big balls to post your F-UP here on G&G and you get major props for that.Stay safe and be safe and don't take my post the wrong way.I would like to meet you someday and give you a smack upside the head and buy you a beer. .38

Thanks .38 and everyone else I want to bring up the 100% step by step on what happened. I wasn't being 100% true to myself and am beating myself up about it.

1.) Rent the movies
2.) Friend comes out to see the gun
3.) Open car door and get gun empty chamber but had a jam, dropped mag and this is when the jam cleared and the round was stripped off without my knowledge. You can guess what happened from there.

Note I am very very freaked out about this and will not be carrying for some time until I can get a new shoulder holster as this one was not very practical and is damaged due to the negligent discharge. I am definately going to remember this for the rest of my days and hope it makes me a better person. We learn from our mistakes right?

Most accidents happen when loading/unloading. So keep that to an absolute minimum. And +1 on not showing anyone your gun while out and about. Someone may report you to the police.
