Not AGAIN!

OK guys I just got over a long battle with Mosinitis and recently i shot 8 round of a M1 garand. Once i heard the ping i knew i had Garanditis. Ive been looking at the CMP Service and Special grades. I know the benifits and differences, but i still cant decide. Tell me which one you would get.

Well i myself have a field grade and am very pleased with it, only downside is the barrel is nearing the end of it's life, maybe i'll get 2 more years out of it totally untouched, a recrown wouldn't hurt and i plan on getting a barrel and new stock set over the course of a year or two in 2010 before prices go really nuts just so i have them around. I have to say, go for the service, a little character on the rifle when you get it will prevent you from weeping if you ding the stock by accident.

It depends.. Are you ordering or going to one of the stores?

Ordering, spend the extra $100 and guarantee that you'll get a good rifle..

If you're going to the store, chances are that you'll find a Field Grade in Service Grade condition.. Usually, the wood's a touch substandard, but the gun itself is premium.. I've lucked out on my last 2, getting Field Grade HRA's that gauged 2 on TE and less than 1 on ME, but I checked a lot of rifles before finding them.

Again, if you're just ordering, go with the Service Grade... You won't be dissapointed, and in the rare chance that you are, they'll make it right..

Paper makes a good point. I wish there were a store close enough for me to drive to so I could make these hard decisions. I think this is a hard one to vote on after his post. I guess the money situation comes in to affect too if you're pinched for dough. If not, then get both!

I agree with the above.

Also, I think it is important to understand what you want the rifle to do. If you are looking for an investment/safe queen then Special grade may be worth it.

If you are ordering and looking for a great shooter then Service grade. I have a great field grade and a Service grade. both shoot very well.

Id go service- I am fortunate enough to live in Tennessee so the drive to Anniston is just tolerable but if youre close you should go... its an overwhelming experience seeing all those beautiful guns. I say if you are going to be shooting it go with a service grade and you wont be disappointed.

I bought my Springfield Armory service grade from the CMP, and let me tell you, it's sure a beauty! And it sure shoots as good as it looks, let me tell you. That is a fact. Either way you go, you won't be sorry. If you don't drive, I imagine you'll still be in for a wait for a couple months anyways. They haven't been sending out any emails lately with an update like they have in the past. Good luck, let us know what you do!

I've heard a few reviews about him, and even those that were less than stellar mentioned the fact that he always makes the purchase right if there's a problem..

The only other issue is that his rifles start at almost double the price of a Service Grade CMP rifle..

Given the choice, I'll take 2 rifles over 1..

Oh who cares. Which ever one you get you will love shooting it. I Garand-tee it.

Just DO it.

Won't be an issue because you are so close?? You're less than 2 hours from the North Store at Camp Perry (Port Clinton, OH)North Store - Camp Perry And if you haven't sent in your paperwork, they'll take care of all of it right there at the store.

Wander over and borrow the gauges (your driver's license is the deposit) and have one of the guys show you how they work, if you've never used them before..
While I'm not telling you NOT to get a Service Grade, that $100 savings will pay for your gas and some ammo!!

Check out all the grades, but be checking for that diamond in the rough.. Stocks can be reconditioned, but wear to muzzle and throat can only be fixed with a new barrel.. And you WILL find some FG's that are better than SG's with some searching.. The folks there are tons of help, too!!

The North Store's closed Wednesday for Veteran's Day which means you should be able to post photos of your new Garand on Thursday.. We'll be waiting!!!
