I've seen a remington 770 (walmart exclusive) for $347. Out the door you get a black "plastic" stock, full length barrel, and a 3X9 40mm scope mounted, in your choice of Cal. 30-06, 308, and two or three others. For $100. more you can get it with a camo stock. Any thoughts?

Reason: I really should spell kheck. er check.
The 710/770 rifles are generally regarded as being poor quality, and by all accounts a big mistake for Remington, I agree with the above poster, a Stevens 200 or Marlin XL7 would be a much better rifle for a similar price.

I guess I am one of the lucky ones so far. I have one in 7mm.-08 and shoot it regularly at the range and haven't encountered any problems with it yet. It has about 3000 rounds through it so far. What are some of the problems that I should be on the lookout for that you guys have experienced? Any input? Thank you.
my brother has a 710 in 300 win. has had it for 4 years with no problems at all he loves it. bought it at gander mtn for 379 out the door i think.
and he best friend has a 770 in 270 and he loves his and paid around 399 i think. i have shot both of the rifles and i did not have any problems with them. if i was i need of a cheap deer rifle i'd buy one in a heart beat.

Don't buy it, get a Marlin XL-7 for $299. The Marlin is much better.
^^^^^absolutely the best advise you could follow. thats like comparing a chevy vega to a coupe de ville. go with the XL-7 (long action) or XS-7 (short action) Marlin

sticky bolts when max open with some sideforce applied (more pronounced on long actions). PIA to try and free float the barrel.

I bought the Rem 770 in Dec 2007 and have not been able to hunt with yet because of problems. brought it home , dry fired it, safety locked and bolt locked, would not move, clip was loose and not stay in. Called Rem , sent back. They returned it and clip still would not stay in gun. Rem sent me another clip, same problem. Rem sent me a new stock and every thing was working fine. I put the scope back on it and shot about 10 rounds to get it ready for deer season 2009. I put 3 rounds in the clip the (night before the season opens) and clip now refuses to engage. I call Rem and now they tell me to take it to Gander Mt for a look see. I wish I had never bought this gun. This is two deer seasons I have missed using a new gun because of problems. I have asked to buy an upgrade or get a refund and Rem tells me they consider that case by case. I just want a gun I can hunt with that will work. So, I am off to Gander Mt. Good luck!
In MHO I'd say if you are going to get a Remington spend the extra 50-$100 and get a Rem 700 SPS, or find a nice mil-surplus rifle, Mausers or Mosin Nagants are both on the cheaper end of things and will make fine hunting rifles.
