well ive decided to start bow hunting. i live in northern indiana where you cant use rifle cartridges so all i use is my shotgun and muzzleloader. so i need more time to hunt which is why i want to start bow hunting. now.....i know next to nothing about bow hunting so i need a basic education on the entire thing. what brands make good bows, which is better a compound or crossbow, how much does a bow cost...EVERYTHING.
thanks!
First off, check your local laws and see if its even legal to hunt with crossbows in your area. here in MN you can only use crossbows if you are physicaly disabled. Even if you can use crossbows, I would prefer a compound myself, its more fun and they are not nearly as heavy or bulky/clumbsy as a cross bow. As far as brands go, you really can't go wrong with any of the major brands like Hoyt, Browning, PSE, Dimond, Mathews and some others. Its all just a matter of personal prefrence and how much $ you are wanting/willing to spend. Got to a local Bowshop and get your draw lenght figured out. You might as well forget about bow hunting this year, it is too late. You need to get a bow and get it all set up and then practice, practice, practice. Practice untill you can always get 2" groups at 30 yds. You can only shoot like 5 times in a row before you have to take a break or else you will start to shack and your groups will get worse and you will get really irrated with your self, so take a little break. Once you can consistantly get 2" groups at 30 yds then set up a deer stand in your yard and practice shooting diffrent yardages from the tree stand. Youd be amazed at how much diffrent it is shooting from a treestand then shooting off of the ground. DO THE DEER AND YOURSELF A FAVOR AND DON'T GET ANY MECHANICLE BLAD BROAD HEADS. They fail way to much and just wound game. It may kill them but you will never find them. stick with the tryed and the true fixed blade broadheads.

i checked the booklet and it says that crossbow hunting is only legal in late archery season but compound is early and late season. i would rather compound bow hunt as its a whole lot quicker than cocking a crossbow!
the main attraction of a crossbow that i see is the sighting capabilities. scope/red dot sights. are the sights on the compounds just as good?
ive got a couple fields and a tree stand set up for hunting on our property. ive got plenty of time for practice practice practice lol
Well, that is another thing to check. You might not even be able to use scopes/red dots dureing bow season. If you can, a crossbow can acuratly shoot past 60 yds, were most compound bow shooters can only shott to around 40, and even if they can shoot further the deer may jumb the string wich is no good. there are just sights with pins for diffrent yardages with bows. Cabela's -- Team Extreme Challenger Three-Pin Sight So i guess it just comes down to what you would rather do.
