No,not really.I always assumed they were a barrel 24"or less with open sights, screwin chokes and possibly a rib.T/C,s turkey barrel for ML shotguns has a screwin choke system.Rem has a 23"barrel that handles 2 3/4"-3"-and 3 1/2" shells. ,,,sam.

Well,

I'm not so sure an exact definition exists.

Basically, it is a longer barrel with an extremely tight choke for longer distance shooting.

The barrel will almost always have either classic iron sights or a scope mount.

+1 to nathangdad.

Very tight choke for longer range shooting, good sights or a scope mount.

Shotguns that are named Turkey shotguns have shorter barrels that are 21" to 24" average lenght.
They also have tighter chokes than the normal shotgun does but will except any kind of choke such as Modified, Full ect.

Now...Why are they shorter ? There shorter to make them more manuvarable and handier in brush and thickets.

Lastly...If you watch turkey hunters on the OutDoor Channel you never see them useing a short barreled turkey shotgun.

A 26...28 and 30 inch barrel will work just as well as a shotgun marketed as a turkey shotgun.

Quiet a few folk's buy turkey shotguns and I'm one of them but fact of the matter is any barrel lenght will do.

I got mine cause it looks Cool !!! LOL

Thumbs up

I just bought a Mossberg A 12 gage with a 28" barrel, ventilated rib and it has a modified choke currently installed...but will accept other choke settings as well.

Now all I need are real turkeys.

IMO...A turkey barrel would be short, either Xtra-full or screw-in chokes, 31/2" chamber, and most I've seen have a vent rib. As stated above basically.

On the topic of length..I killed my first two turkeys with a normal 500 with a 28" barrel. I had a issue on the first bird where I almost couldn't get the barrel on him because of a tree. I have since went "shortie" and wouldn't use a long barrel again unless it was a emergency. The short barrel isn't neccasary, but it's WAY handier.

Just did a "search" on Auction Arms.com for turkey barrels. Most listed and shown were 24" barrels, one being a 25".

Good thread here. Hadn't thought of some of the points raised above when I bought my 28" Mossy 12 gage. Mine will still work, though, because I've got plenty of room to swing my barrel at the turkey hunting blind I'll be using.

Ox...the barrel on my current turkey gun is factory 20" (moss535) my older one was 24" (moss835) and I wouldn't mind a 181/2" one! LOL these trees and brush gets THICK down here...and I like to "run N' gun" turkeys, so I rarely know the position I'll be sitting in when the LongTom comes calling. In a set situation, ie Blind, like you'll be in...barrel length aint so important, so go enjoy yourself next spring!
