You may want to check that 742 out before you buy it. They can wear the receiver pretty bad where the bolt comes to a stop. Because of the multi-lug system and the fact that it kind of screws itself out, the recoil causes the lugs to groove the receiver. After a time the bolt will come back and the lugs will hang in the grooves, keeping the bolt back. I would have a gunsmith look at it if I wasn't sure. Just my opinion.

I've heard this to and have looked at a lot of well used 742's and the only one I've seen with a little damage is the one I own.

Pull the bolt back until it locks open. Look inside the reciever on the inside oppisit wall of the reciever you'll see a fine rail machined into the reciever.
Thats what takes a beating, that fine rail the bolt slides back and forth on.
Mine is jagged. It almost looks like it's suppose to be that way.

I don't intend to use this rifle anymore, but it's not because of the rail.
It's because it sounds like an Artillery piece being fired.
It's the loudest rifle I've ever heard. People sound like they've inhaled helium to my ears after I shoot it. And it's not a carbine.

The only big bore rifle I own is a Winchester 94 in 45 Colt. I don't use it for hunting, as I have plenty of other rifles for that job. Although it would have been handy today. Yes, I got skunked. I saw 6 deer today, all on the side of the road, dead. Feh.

How strong is the N.E.F. 45-70 Handi-Rifle? I've thought about
getting one of these. I don't know why but I want something
that hits like a sledgehammer.

what is a NEF 45-70,I don't know alot about rifles? There are guns that make the 45-70 look like a bb gun.Try a .450 marlin,it's the same bullet caliber and weight, but traveling much faster.

To the handloader all the 450 Marlin is is a 45-70 with a belt. It has no advantage whatsoever over a 45-70. If you want to make a 45-70 look like a 'BB gun' you'll have to look to the Elephant calibers.

the 450 marlin certainly isn't the same as a 45-70 with a belt.Compare Hornady leverevolution for instance,The 45-70 has a muzzle energy of 3032 ft lbs,as where the 450 marlin has a muzzle energy of 3572 ft lbs. That's enough difference to make one opt for the 450 when buying a new gun,the .450 ring is there so you can't chamber the round in a regular 45-70 and blow the gun up.

You managed to miss my point. To a HANDLOADER there is no difference at all between the two. Check out the case dimensions, it's the same cartridge case with a belt instead of a rim.

moosemike is correct, the only place where the .450 has a ballistic advantage is factory ammunition, the .45-70 can be handloaded to equal .450 ballistics.
