This thread is probably pretty much dead but I have never been to the "survival" section of G&G and I just found it and found the article very interesting. I once heard the saying, "The day you wished you had a pistol is the day you wished you had a rifle."
That makes perfect sense to me. If I were an ordinary civilian with no weapons knowledge and my weapons training consisted of a few range sessions with my pistol how effective would I be in self defense? Compared to a rifle how hard is it to master pistol shooting? Pretty hard. Combine the already tough skill of using a pistol effectively and then add adrenaline, shakey hands, and tunnel vision. The ordinary person with little pistol training sporting a Glock 19 is better than nothing but not much.
I would never advise a regular person to buy for their first weapon a pistol, I would advise them to buy a rifle or shotgun. It doesnt have to even be an assault type rifle, I would advise them to get themselves a good bolt rifle and learn how to use it, which would be quicker than learning even basic skills with a pistol.
You want a weapon that is simple and effective. Instead of dumping a magazine in the direction of a foe with little effect outside scaring someone which would no doubt happen as it does already, that one rifle round will get on target easier and if it does hit, your foe is going down, instantly, if you are using a high powered rifle or a shotgun.
I say even in the event of some sort of breakdown stick with a rifle, odds are you wont be the only one walking around with one, yes the police probably wont bother to brace up a seemingly unarmed individual but badguys will, which will basically turn you into an seemingly unarmed target which now has to put that Glock 19 to work. Stick with your rifle or shotgun, telling someone to get a pistol is bad advise unless that person really knows how to use one.

+1 and I still say shotgun, particularly for beginners, you don't have to aim as much as point.

if I ONLY had ONE gun - or was only allowed 1 gun
it'd be a 12ga shotgun with smooth bore, choked w/ couple different chokes. anything between a squirrel & a grizzly you can kill it! & w/o destroying to much meat.
try that with any other caliber |

Interesting thread...glad I saw it. I have been considering a pistol for home use (self-defense), but hadn't considered a shotgun.
Though it would be a bit hard to put in the nightstand or under the pillow (unless you have one of those big body pillows!) lol

if you're placing it in nightstand, whats any different than reaching for it next to your bed ?
I also forgot the gun would without a doubt HAVE tritium night sights! does no good if you cant see your sights!

I agree regarding night sights and my Glock17 wears them, which is what I have next to my bed, I wasnt trying to say a pistol is worthless because it definitely has a place, just not in the hands of someone who hasnt trained enough with it. For a person who has very little trigger time a shotgun with night sights would be ideal, couple that with some #4 buckshot and you would be ready for anything defense related.
