Ruger 77 accuracy

I can feel the fever coming on over one of those little Ruger 77 Compacts in .308. Anybody have any experience or comments on them? How do they stack up against the Rem 700 for out of the box accuracy?

Thx,

GG

I saw a sample in .338 Federal that averaged 1.21" at 100 yards for 5 shot groups. So 3 shot groups would mostly be sub moa. My full size Ruger 77 in .300 Win Mag will do a little under an inch with the right ammo. In fact, I shot a 1" group at 150 yards last week.

The Marlin XS-7 in .308 is only $290 at Walmart, and sub-MOA capable out of the box.

It's been freaking out Gun Mag writers for about a year now the 700 is SO last decade

I like that Marlin, but it's not a 16" barreled carbine.

Way to think G.Green! I see these rag writers get on one item and brag it up to high heaven and 6mo,s or a year later the same ones are calling it a POS.I would stick with what is known to be tried and true until they prove the new item actually works. They might be the best but let someone else spend the money to find out.I remember very well when Rem. came out with the M710 and rag writers were telling how wonderful it was.I remember bullets that were the greatest, until they got in actual hunting situations.I remember how great synthetic stocks were until they found many would droop in the forearm, making contact with the barrel.I even remember some getting better patterns from steel shot than lead.Sometimes they're right, but let someone else spend the money to find out. ,,,sam.

The Ruger Hawkeye is actually a different and better rifle than the M77. I'm not sure which model you mean.

I have one in 308 that's a tack driver CircuitRider another member here as one in .358 Winchester that is a tack driver.

I can't recall the other members name that have Hawkeye rifles but so far these rifle have been accurate.

Be forwarned I've found some members to give negative advice which was in regards to the M77.
The Hawkeye is a better built rifle with added features found on custom rifle's selling for a Hel_ of a lot more.

Know dought Marlin, Mossberg and Savage sell excellent cheaper rifles but sometimes haveing a work of art in your hands such as the, still new Ruger Hawkeye is nice and pleaseing and a pleasure to own.

EDIT:: I'm not knocking M77 rifles on the contray many owners have excellent shooters that are acurate yet many have had issues with M77's acuratcy. But that's really all. The guns are very well made.

My cousin has an older M77 in 6MM Rem, and that is one sweet rifle. I shot it this Oct when he couldn't get a good group, I shot 1 5 shot group that measured 1.3" @ 100 yds. The rifle has never been properly cleaned but still shoots well and killed plenty of deer to prove it.

As far as out of the box accuracy vs a 700, I am just going to say that it isn't going to matter whether you get a M77, a M700, a M70, a XS-7, or a Savage, with the right ammo, they are all capable of out shooting most shooters.

Hunting Rifle Accuracy

This is a good article, disagree with 1-2 points in it but the general article is spot on. I see too many people that get carried away with which rifle is more precise when they are choosing a rifle to shoot deer at less than 200 yards. 1/2" variation in group size doesn't matter one bit in reality, but it sure is fun to get a tack driver.

LOL...You need to go around to all the manufacture's website's feller.
Dang near everyone of them have came out with target triggers, ajustable triggers.
The Ruger Hawkeye trigger which they named LC-6 is wonderful to say the least.
It has NO movement to it what so ever...NONE. When you put your finger on the trigger and apply a little presure it SNAPS and goe's BANG.

I had to get use to it because I've never owned a rifle with such a fine trigger.
No creep...No take Up. It's perfect !!!!

Sorry Hemi. I did see he said M77 but I got my wires crossed anyway.
I hope you did'nt take my post as being smart butt. I never intended it to be that way.
Later model M77's I think I read some where now had LC-6 triggers.
I'll go check later.

My former M77's trigger was about as bad as a mil-spec AR15 trigger.. Sorta like dragging sand paper over sand paper.. I picked up a snap cap and sat in front of the TV one nigh and ran that trigger through about 175-200 trigger pulls and it got a touch better, but was still awful..

It was a 25-06, and the accuracy wasn't anything to write home about, either.. Everything was tight, and the Nikon scope wasn't the problem.. I finally got tired of burning up all sorts of ammo to find what the gun liked, and instead turned it into cash and bought a Marlin XL7, sling and scope, and still had $150 left over for ammo.. And the Marlin shot groups less than half the size of the Ruger.

Beautiful gun, but being pretty didn't make it shoot well.. The Marlin's evidence of that.. Ugly, but shoots great and has a great trigger to boot..

No prob AH, Father in law has a mkii its trigger was like pulling a pig through the mud.
A Timney trigger turmed a 2.5" rifle into a 3/4" rifle with the same loads.

I had a Ruger Model 77 in 7mm Mag that would do a tad over 2" at 200 yards if I held my mouth just right and the trigger was great. Nothing wrong with their out of box performance.

(Bought it in 1980)
