I'm looking at a deer rifle for my wife, a friend has one that he says is a full custom 308. It has no markings on it but 308. Who would make something like this and what is it worth?

Welcome to Gun and Game Rstaff. Now it is going to be very hard to figure out what or who built the 308 rifle without haveing pictures.
Matter of fact it will be impossible to.
If you can take plenty of pictures and post them here possible one or more of the fine members here can help you sir.

Sounds like some gunsmith's pet project. Any regular vendor would have their name on the rifle. Is there a serial number?
Does it look like perhaps a surplus action sporterised?
How is the overall quality - nicely done or what we call a 'bubba job'?

That's a pretty hard question to answer, without knowing anything about the rifle other than being chambered for .308 Win! Without pictures there are a couple things that would help, however.

#1 what action is it made on?

#2 what kind of stock, wood or synthetic?

#3 What kind of sights are on he barrel?

#4 is it drilled and tapped for a scope? If so ......

#5 what kind of scope is on the rifle?, and what kind of mount?

A full custom simply means someone made it to order for someone! The prices can go from not worth as much as a fence post, to a $10K masterpiece.

The best thing you can do is post a few pictures of the rifle from all angles to show what you have, otherwise It is imposible to tell you anything with the info we have so far!

There are too many unknowns. What if this was a "remake" of something that went though a fire?

Sounds ok to me.Just try to make sure it shoots good.The lack of a name means nothing unless reselling.Bet we could put a name on it if we had pictures. ,,,sam.

my most custom rifle is the most plain jane of the bunch, and says simply 7imp on the bbl.
it's not ackley but icl imp.
i know what the action and stock etc is it's whats inside where all the money is at.
you wanna know the difference in your actions,as many old rifles were built into calibers they really shoudn't have been.
others are built by guy's with little money,and are solid performers which will last forever.
they have the right parts with little flash.
it's like buying a musclecar from a college kid.

Wlcome to the forum, Rstaff. I have to agree with the others who have said that we need more information. Photographs would be of great help. Left side, right side, bolt removed from the rifle, a shot of the receiver, and measurements, too. Barrel length, length of the rifle overall, length of the stock, barrel shape (cylindrical or tapering). We can't really try to answer your questions until we have all of that information.

Taking a blue sky guess here, I suspect a gunsmith took a Mauser 98K action, modified the magazine to feed .308 Winchester as opposed to 8mm Mauser, and put a .308 aftermarket barrel of some kind on it before mounting it into a sporter or Monte Carlo stock. (That's the one with the built-in cheekpiece on the buttstock.) But without photos, we're all just guessing here.
