I'm pretty sure that OCD is not involved and I hope he never gets it. That is not a good thing for ANYONE to have.

To me it is more of a moral thing than a legality thing. Just because a person can take 20, 30, 50 or unlimited numbers of deer IMO it doesn't make it right to do so if you don't plan on eating the MAJORITY of it yourself. Yes, I can understand giving some away to those that don't/can't hunt but hunting with the intent to give it all away after "x' number of deer in the freezer isn't proper in my opinion.

I have taken this post way off track and I will stop here as I've made my (only mine) opinion known. Sorry for derailing this train.

Back on track. I don't understand why the guy took that buck illegally? I'm 100% positive I would never have done that. What makes it even worse is he is from my home state of MN. Embarassing to say the least.

For those that said they would have done the same are no better than the guy who did it. If you ever follow through and poach a deer I hope you are caught and punished. You'll get no sympathy from me.

Happy legal and morale hunting!

MLN1963 - I think your ideals and mine are very similar. I look at every game before I shoot and know the consequences of the shot, generally to me that's processing fee and about how much meat I will get. The meat that I give to friends and family is more because they like the meat, but don't hunt. I give my parents maple sausage and occasionally a summer sausage because they enjoy it, and they have given me so much over the years. Other friends haven't gotten into hunting or didn't have parents that took them, so I'll give them some.

There is one place I hunted this year that was "kill everything", but that was because it was a tree orchard that had a nuisance license, and my cousin's bro-in-law really wants all the deer gone because they mess up his trees, which is how he makes money to provide for his family. Even then, the small does (70 & 80 lb) that I shot were given to some of his farm hands that cut out straps to feed their families.

I guess long story short, you didn't ruffle my feathers, in fact, thanks for letting me be able to say the clarifying statements I have made. I do love hunting and everything that goes along with it. I love doing it responsibly.

As far as filling your freezer then hunting to give meat away . . . I think that decision should be left up to the individual. As long as you are staying in legal limits, there are still merits to doing your part in management as well as providing meat for whomever you give it to.

I let a bunch walk off also, am 56 yrs old and a life long hunter of the sportsman variety. I just chose not to buy meat from the store and know people that can use some help on their grocery bill.
I'm kinda backwards from you here. I want to fill my freezer with the rifle to make sure I've got enough meat, then claim a trophy (and still get the meat) from a nice buck.

We have a long bow season and a 2 week rifle season. I hunt on public land and that gets busy in rifle season so I have found what works here is to hunt bow only areas and just get er done! I understand the managment problems in South Carolina because I have very good friend that lives in South Carolina by the name of Windham.

Some places the deer are so thick they need to be kept down for safety on the roads and to keep the deer herds healthy. Some folks around here hunt and give away almost all they harvest and the people who get are very happy to have it. I think it is a regional thing.
Better to give it away than see the deer dead on the road shoulder like we have here, BTW I do not hunt any more but many do.
