He must've said something to someone that he shouldn't have. Only one person can keep a secret.

I'm just glad there is no limit on bucks in South Carolina. I couldn't imagine only killing two deer a YEAR.

I don't know if I would hunt if I could only shoot one a year. I mean, I'm hooked bad enough going like 4 days a week, I could imagine if I killed the only one I could kill in the first two weeks of deer season, our season is 4 1/2 months long!

there are some areas like around Leader and staples MN that you can shoot up to 5 or more deer a year depending on population size.

Do you actually eat all the deer you harvest or are you just into killing the deer and giving the meat away?

Well just because I GO a lot doesn't mean I HARVEST a lot! I'm fairly picky about the deer I kill, and actually prefer to kill big does over the bucks in the area. Yes, I eat what I kill, I do give some away though. To parents, friends, one of my friends owns a local restaurant and he and his head cook have some standing orders for various meats. I really just love sitting in the stands on family land though. My favorite part of hunting is staring at the deer through my bino's though. It's a super long season, and I go a lot, but before I pull the trigger I make sure sending that bullet is worth the processing fee!

EDIT: They have orders for maple sausage and cube steak. Not to serve at the restaurant, they just like the meat and enjoy cooking.

Between my wife and myself, we take about 7 deer a season. We eat it all year long. If we have more than we need, we know families that'll take some but none goes to waste.

Well the first month of our 4 1/2 month season is bucks only, so that's all I would take. This year I shot my first buck (7 point, last year was my first year hunting). I shot a doe at my cousin's brother in law's tree orchard, he has a nuisance license so those don't count against your doe tags, it was a small doe, I gave it to some people that work for my cousin's bro in law. So now I'm looking for about 3 nice doe's to put in the freezer, then I'm switching to bow.

The way I see this is. He stole an opportunity from a law abideing hunter, possible. He should have to pay double for his crime and time in the county jail.

If any here would of made the shot he did out of season than honestly your a Slob Hunter no better than he is.
Sorry thats the way I see it...A.H

Yoy tell 'em AH. I don't get out nearly half as much as i would like to, and people like that probably do that kinda thing all the time. They just rarely get caught..... And it feels like they stole an opportunity from me, regardless of where they shot it.

I didn't mean to rattle any feathers it's quite possibly they way I read some of your posts. It seems like the the theme was kill, kill, kill. I have a good friend that I do not respect as a hunter. All he wants to do is kill stuff. He does it all legally and spends a lot of money doing it. His family usually takes 10 deer a year minimum (legally) and they do eat a some but most of it is given away (and yes I have been given some).

We differ in opinion on harvesting and killing. I think he is just killing deer that don't need killing if he is just going to give it away. He thinks that if he (they) kill it legally and give it away all is well. I don't think he is setting a very good example for his kids by doing this either but they are his and not mine.

Now, that may not seem all that bad to some people but we haven't even talked about the other things they hunt for, Elk, Antelope, Pig, Turkey..... Oh, and deer in other states. You get the idea. There is no way they can eat all that stuff each year. I'm not anti-hunting in any way shape or form. I'm anti-waste and anti-abuse of the system.

I tend to think the Native Americans had it right. Take what you need and leave the rest.

Why is it wrong to eat deer if you don't hunt deer? As long as you respect the law. I am a meat hunter and a sport hunter both. Kill the freezer full with a bow and hunt big buck with rifle. I give pig and deer meat away every year. There is a reason there is no limit on bucks in South Carolina - its called managment! I let a bunch walk off also, am 56 yrs old and a life long hunter of the sportsman variety. I just chose not to buy meat from the store and know people that can use some help on their grocery bill.

You should consider yourself lucky to live where there is such an abundance of deer that they don't put a limit on bucks. I've never lived in such a place and I reckon most people don't. Public land is pretty picked over here due to heavy hunting.

He isn't doing any shelters or poor folks any good. His goal is self gratification only. He kills to kill and that is it. If he can get a little out of the freezer so there is room for another off he goes. There is no possible way he could EVER come close to eating anywhere near the amount he takes. After all he gives away every new season he is giving away a bunch from the last season just to make room again.

So I'm weird and think it isn't how it should be done. I guess that is just how I was raised.

While I may hunt antelope, boar, bear, deer, quail, pheasant and catch salmon, catfish, panfish, etc. my wife and I do eat it and have no problem giving some away to others who like or need some.
I do know a fella who fills his freezer every year with similar game only to throw it out every spring and start anew. He has OCD and that is part of his symptoms. He made 300 bottles of homemade wine and keeps them all, drinking none of them. He will catch 200lbs of catfish and winds up throwing them away months later. He has 5 boats but wants to use yours. Monkey wrenches, he has about 10. Who needs more than 1 or 2? Screwdrivers? Hundreds.
Maybe this guy you know has the same issues?
