Need to pick someone's 870 brain

I found a fair condition 870 LW Magnum 20 gauge with a slug (smoothbore) barrel.. I know there was a change to this gun, or at least the barrel, during the manufacturing era of the gun..

I'd like to slap on a shotshell barrel on this receiver, but I was wondering what the change was??

I bought a new in the box, but dull finished barrel from a guy on Gunbroker, but it's not here yet.. Is the only difference the size of the ring that slides over the tube?

If this barrel doesn't work, I'll just toss it back on Gunbroker, as I bought it for $70, but I thought I'd ask if that's the only change that was made??

I don't know about the change but if it's an 870 barrel it's going to fit.

I've got a 70's model 870 Wingmaster. I heard because it popped a lot of folks in the jaw LOL a change was made to the butt stock.
Thats all I've ever heard and really don't know if it is true or not...A.H

After doing some research, I think what I was seeing was people who were warning that it's a barrel for a 870 LW Magnum, and not for a 1100 LT (auto)..

Thanks AH!!

If it is a 20 gauge 870 barrel, it will fit on yours. Post some pics once you get it on.

I did some cleaning on the gun last night. At some point in time, someone painted the gun camo, and there's over spray in several areas.. The finish on the wood is sorta dull for a Wingmaster and now I know why.. The stripper used to take the paint of dulled the finish.

I never planned on the gun being some beauty queen, anyway. Although this sounds like bragging, I just consider it being an excellent deal. I bought the gun with the slug barrel and the extra barrel, all for less than $300 out the door.

I was brought up on 20 gauges, so the gun will be cherished and used, and at the price, I'll be more likely to use it that much more, rather than ding up something else while hunting.

Thanks again for the info!! The barrel should be here early next week.

Absolutely!! I've got enough safe queens, and this 870 isn't bad, but it's not going to win a beauty pagent. The VR barrel shipped this weekend.. Photos of the package to follow..

I sighted in the slug barrel to my Winchester slugs this weekend. Not much adjustment needed, and pretty consistant, for open sights and smoothbore slug barrel at 100 yards..

I'm sure my shooting would be better if I could see better..

I wasn't this old a few years ago..

Paper, It looks like you have fiber optic sights on this. Can't really tell for sure with the picture, but if you don't, get some from Brownells. It makes a WORLD of difference with the sights. Easy to put on also.

Yep. The slug barrel came with the fiber optic sights. I didn't know how much I liked them until Saturday when helping a guy sight in a 870 without them..
