I'm trying to remove the scope base on a rifle and I'm good except for one screw. I don't want to strip out the slot so, does anyone have a suggestion for getting the recalcitrant screw loose? There appears to be the remains of something on the screws I've removed. Epoxy? This base has been on there for 40 year or so. Thanks.

have ready the PROPER size screw driver, or allen wrench and a small hammer.
apply the tip of a pistol-grip soldering iron to the head of the screw, until the metal surrounding the screw is warm....
put the screw driver in place and rap it sharply with the hammer a couple of times, then try to turn the screw out... It's worked for me in the past....but, it may take several applications......

I was going to tell you the same thing, had on with nonremoveable locktite and the old soldering iron worked, used a small one for electronic soldering and gave the screw driver a sharp rap with a small ballpeen hammer and it came right out.
