They aren't easy to find; but if you have a chance to pick one up, billy, grab yourself a halon fire extinguisher. Halon is rated to work on any kind of fire, even combustible metals like magnesium. Just be very careful if you use it in an enclosed space, because it works by cutting oxygen off from the fire. In an enclosed space, you can drive all the oxygen out of the room if you go hog-wild with the stuff. I favor halon over Purple K because there is no residue to get into your electronics or to clean up.

Cyrano you are right about halon not leaving a residue to damage electronic instruments but good luck finding one. Halon 1211 found in hand portable fire extinguishers is a chlorinated flourocarbon which is damaging to the earth's protective ozone layer. It was therefore outlawed for production many years ago. If you are lucky enough to find one it's probably the last one you would use because since it's accessability is limited you would pay more than a king's randsome to get it recharged. If you extinguish a fire in an enclosed space you will want to leave the area asap because the byproducts produced by the interaction of fire and halon 1211 are toxic. As for putting out magnesium it will extinguish the fire momentarily but because halon is comes out as a gas it will dissipate and the fire will re-ignite. Magnesium when it burns will produce its own oxygen so displacing the oxygen is not an option. It will continue to burn until all the magnesium is gone. There is a chemical made by the Ansul Chemical Corp. called Metal-X. It gets poured on the burning magnesium and forms a crust over the burning material until there is none left to burn. The idea is containment of the material so it does not cause the heat to cause other nearby materials to combust. Never throw water on a magnesium fire because it will explode. Never use water on an electrical fire because of electrocution hazard. If you are concerned about residue on sensitive electronics stick with CO2 extinguishers. It is liquid dry ice and vaporizes into a gas when it hits atmosphere therefore leaving no residue. CO2 is readily available and relatively inexpensive making the extinguisher rechargeable. Hope this helps. Former California fire extinguisher service technician reg.#5869. From the 70's.

Halon is gone but now they use Halotron. I hear it's good but it's very pricey. A 2.5 pouder is over $100.00.
Fire Extinguishers - Halotron - Fire Protection - Safety - Grainger Industrial Supply
But then again Grainger is somewhat overpriced.

Any electricians you know you could barter some ammo with? good luck.
Correct, sounds like a neutral problem. If your whole house is doing it, check your panel box. If nothing is found there call your power company and have them check your meter base and transformer connections. If its the connections at the transformer, all your neighbors who are connected to that transformer will be having the same problem. Had a call from a customer a week ago. We have a bad time with tree rats (squirrels) chewing on our wires. They had chewed her neutral in two and that produced weird voltages on her electrical circuit, burning up her tv, fridge and various other appliances. Get it checked!..........Ooooops.Just read where your friend had fixed it. Did he say he found loose grounds or nuetrals? Just asking cause a loose ground wire shouldn't cause those problems. Have you had any problems since? " The appliance will operate normally without the ground wire because it is not a part of the conducting path which supplies electricity to the appliance. In fact, if the ground wire is broken or removed, you will normally not be able to tell the difference." http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu...ic/bregnd.html
