Well, while I believe that you don't know what you're doing (or you wouldn't do it), there are plenty of options, and of course it is your decision. Just do it the right way.

Don't add a clamp-on bipod. You know, the one that you're probably looking at buying, the universal one that clamps on the barrel. Just don't. You probably think it will help with accuracy, it won't. In all likelihood, it will make it worse. If you find another mounting option, have at it.

If you're going to change the stock, don't go with ATI. PLENTY of people have sold their crappy ATI stocks and gone back to their original stocks. It's not worth it.

If you're going to get a turned down bolt, don't go with the ATI crap. It's even worse than their stock. Do it the right way, go with The Boltman or that Ebay guy that does a good job on them. Can't remember his name.

If you're going to mount a scope, please, keep this rifle as original and unnecessary-expense-free, and go with a scout scoping option. Don't drill and tap.

And finally, don't come to the forums asking for help and advice then get angry if you don't like the responses. Typing like a third grader doesn't help either.

Before anyone asks, yes, I'm in a bad mood.

Thats the spirit!I am somewhat surprised by all the advice telling you to buy a rifle when you stated you wish to put your own personality in a rifle you are fond of for personal reasons.I am sorry to hear about the loss of a loved one in service of this country.I can well understand why you wish to finish what your uncle wished to do.I admire your love and respect for him.Besides, the way I understand it,some either think they lack skills and intelligence to improve on a firearm they like so they have to get their thrills out of a box.Kind of like finding a mate you can love and want to share a lifetime with or hiring a prostitute. Some just don't have the will or skill to develope a gun they can truely be proud of so they buy a substitute that never really fulfillls their desires. If done properly, the custom job is the love of a lifetime. ,,,sam.

See, the negative replies you're receiving aren't because of what you want to do. It's because you've apparently already made up your mind on what to do, and all advice given to you is ignored or gone completely against.

Multiple people have strongly suggested you drop the ATI idea.

Dude it is your rifle do what you want with it. A rifle is like a car you get a fast car and what do you want to do with it....you want to make it faster. You got a rifle it shoot you want it to shoot better. Its is the same thing. I have a m38 that i am planning on personalizing. Replacing the stock free floating and putting a LER scope on it. If this is something that your uncle would have wanted go for it.

I agree with Sam and Dave on this one, just go for it. I know how ya feel about wanting a one of a kind that you did yourself. I have a M/N I sporterized, but my fav is my Arisaka 99. It won't cost an arm and a leg if you are handy and have the time. Here's my 99, I shortened the barrel, removed the rear sight, re-blued it, mounted a scope, made a new stock, bedded and free floated the barrel and curved the bolt to clear the scope. Total cost under $200. including the $98 I payed for it to start with. It shoots great and has taken deer out to 220 yds. so far. I reload so ammo is not a problem. It ma y not mean a lot to anyone else but like mine you'l have a one you did and there isn't another one in the world like it.

I used my Mosin Nagant as is.. and it was perfect... OK, I need a few more days at the range to be comfortable taking shots of 100yds... but so far it has been good to me...

derek, if it's an increase in performance and "cool factor" that your uncle wanted, in addition to the walnut Monte Carlo stock and the jmeck scope mount with good glass, take a look in the Mosin Nagant Forum. There is a thread in there - I'll have to go see if I can find it and add the link here - that deals with a very simple and safe way to add a particular muzzle brake to a Mosin. It involves working with a rotary file and drilling one hole in the front sight mount that does not require you to permanently remove the hooded front post, then pinning the muzzle brake to and through the front sight mount. It's a project I'd like to attempt next year, and I'm a mechanical klutz, That tells you how simple it is.

Here's the link to that thread on the muzzle brake:

I have gone the ATI stock, scout scope, and bipod route and it is fine for the type of shooting I packaged it for (seated bench and varmint) . I will admit for this project I went black for the aesthetics as well. The stock and pod can be found cheaply at combathunting COMBATHUNTING.COM Official Website - Combat Hunting Store Rifle Scopes Quality Hunting, Shooting, Camping and Outdoor Gear All On Sale At Competitive Prices.. My rifle is the one linked in the above post.

Here are the pros and cons to this project:

Pros, the stock is light and gives a modern look to the rifle. Also it is less expensive than the other options. Bipod can be removed easily to accommodate shooting sticks.

Cons: There is no drop in. It will need to be inleted (which can be a pain). The bipod is plastic.

Now understand that I have 6 MN's (91/30's. M44, 91/30 repro sniper) and I wanted one of them to be suited for "my" multipurpose needs. I chose the most accurate 91/30 and because I reload I can use it for smaller game as well.

To be honest, if I was going to build a dedicated deer rifle, the Boyd stock would be my choice because of the ergonomic design and IMHO it is more of a timeless hunting rifle stock. Heck anyone can go to Big5(or other gun shop), pick up a 91/30 and a box of winchester 180gr, clean it up strap-on your ammo pouch/ sling and go big game hunting the same day, but that is not the point.

[soap box]

As far as advising to buy other rifles, the thread was not "what type of rifle should I buy for deer hunting", it was " trying to make a awsome deer rifle out of a mosin nagant..."

I see this alot in gun forums, if asking pistol questions, it always ends up with 45 ACP or its crap.

In MN forums it is "dont waste your money" and just buy another rifle, or why put a $100 something on a $90 rifle.

I believe that if the MN were stored and distributed from countries other than the eastern block they would be much more in price. Just as some companies purchase them and resell them for twice their economic value. Now I understand the concept of supply and demand and perceived value but again my point is we like to personalize things to make them our own. If that means spending $200 on a $90 rifle and your not spending your diaper money, well so be it.

[gets off soap box]

We are advising you to make good decisions to save you time and money, well because most of us have been down this road before.

G&G is the best forum I have found for anyone considering customizing a MN. You can find great credible advice and tons of rhetoric, but that adds to the fun.
