I am pretty sure that when the military DRMOs their firearms that they destroy them now a days.

Besides, you really do not want a pistol that was used in military service. By the time they DRMO them they are on their last leg. Or last toe. Imagine a pistol that has been in service for ten or fifteen years and is likely very close if not past its barrel life.

... look for police department sales, some sell older duty weapons when they change their siderms.

... the M9 is a good pistol, I've carried one for over 16 years.

I'd just buy a new model 92--although the service guns are well built some were shot alot and I don't know if/where you might find them on the market--for a few bucks more a new one would be worth it. When we did our quals the guns were worked pretty hard but I don't know if we had any that were carried alot/shot a little (or even if any of these might ever be sold). Our service guns worked very well and were very reliable (the only problem was the non-expanding ammo we were forced to use). Easy to take apart and put back together as well.

I asked a dealer that I have done a lot of business with for a 92. He got me a used one for $224. Its close enough for me and it shoots really well. You may want to try that.

I dunno about other people that handled the M9 in the service but i know when i fired one in training which we went to the handgun range quite a bit the used ones seemed to be able to hit everything your not aiming at so if you want one id go for a new one not a surplus.

... I would agree, some are crap while others are better taken care of. I'd either go new or privately used ... possibly even a PD sell, not a MIL gun.

+1 on getting one privately. I like the 92/M9 well enough, decent gun. The latest American Rifleman has a write up on the M9 this month.
This was my last Qualification, I got lucky that day and got a decent weapon. Qualified Expert. Yes Larry, I stuck 2 extra in the head shot just in case

LOL ... way to go Top ... way to go !

... a few years ago I had to qualify with a M9 that had a 'kicked' rear sight. At 3.5 yards aiming at the center of the head, I was hitting the right ear ... twice, was not a fluke or a yanked trigger. At 25 yards, I was aiming at the target to the left of mine just to get on my target. I loved the CATM guy who said it was me and not the M9 ... until he fired it and realized he was wrong.

... strangely enough, given the extra attention paid to shooting that day ... and even with jacked sights, I still qualified expert. (Even the civilian cop and shooting instructor next to me was laughing about it) ... It was just my day. Mr. Murphy and a favorable Kentucky windage helped ...

... on the flip side ... with a good M9 and less attention paid, I generally score just under expert...

I understand. I went to qual for M9 in '88 for resource protection for honor guard M1's downtown. The military had a shortage of 9mm so they qualified us on the old S&W .38's My rear sight kept falling off every 10 rounds or so. The CATM troop kept trying to fix it, I asked for another gun. They didn't want to give up another gun so I struggled through it. I qualified but didn't do great.

Last month or the month before the NRA American Rifleman magazine did a story on the 10 best handguns ever .
The Beretta M9 was NOT included. LOL

This month's issue of American Rifleman has a letter posted from the President of Beretta asking why the M9 was'nt included in the top 10.
He went on to say that our military has used it with success for 10 years now yada yada yada.

As I was flipping on through the pages of American Rifleman I find a full feature story about the M9.
I did'nt read it and want later.

I really like the m9, yeah 600 isn't bad considering a good glock will cost me 550 but I can't stand the weight of the glock... to light. But yeah I was just wondering if they did surplus on the m9's from the military, I got a Cz-82 surplus and it was a tack driver. I read the article in the new one last night, very impressed. Yeah it should have been on the top 10... there were some on the top ten that made me go wtf... Would deff, like to pick one up though. So where you getting them new for under 600?

Well, there are commemorative M9's available? Problem is, most people won't like to buy them because shooting them decreases their value. and I don't know about any of you, but I don't buy guns I don't plan on shooting. lol

But if you want to buy one, they are available...

BERETTA M9 92 US MARINE MARINES LTD ED NIB I TRADE : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com

And another...
Beretta 92 M9 Commemorative US Army 9mm ANIB : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com

And, yet another...
Beretta M9 "America's Defender" - REDUCED : Other Military at GunBroker.com

There are plenty of other "special edition" or "commemorative" M9's on GB and I'm sure the other gun auction sites as well.

But here's the next best thing...

Beretta 92 FS 9MM Italian Version Brand New : Semi-auto at GunBroker.com

I've got a model 92 Brigadier Elite in 9mm and I love it. Great shooter and very accurate. Blued with stainless barrel and decocker.

FWIW, you can shave off more money if you get a Taurus clone. They are sold in stainless for about the same cost as a blued beretta, and are nearly identical. The only apparent difference is the safety.

I have one that looks like a pimps gun, with gold plated parts and polished stainless steel. I also have a pair of 96s and 5 of the 92fs. I think a used gun is fine if you check the block. If it looks worn, simply replace it. Barrels are found on gunbroker in a wide range of prices, and if you put a target barrel on you will likely tighten your groups. Also, adding a hogue wrap around grip helps some people. I find it makes the grip a bit fat. While better handguns exist, not many are available for the price Berettas go for. CDNN offers them on occasion for under $400 for excellent condition ones. 44mag had 96 complete slides a while back for around $150, giving you the option to shoot .40S&W.

If you really have your heart set on one, but a stainless slide 92fs. The frame does not matter so much, and the ones sold as stainless are 99% of the time an alloy with the finish applied to make it look pretty. Having a stainless slide will hold up better. The best thing I ever did for my first used beretta was to change the recoil spring and rod. A few extra bucks spent on new parts for a used gun make it go a lot farther. I would also avoid those commemorative guns if you want a shooter, or buy an extra slide. The silkscreening will rub off quickly if handled much.

^^^ Yep, and that's because the M9 is from the same platform/frame and you may as well then just get a Beretta model 92. lol As you said, it looks the same, or as close as you'll get, they shoot great, they're reliable and quite accurate (to me anyhow)...

well whats the difference??? I was reading in that American Rifleman that the 92 FS is the m9? I'm just not a 100 percent sure what the difference is about the guns lol, though I would like to get the one with the rail at the bottom of the frame to mount lights/lazers etc etc

... the M9 is the 92. The version we use does not have any rail system. You can get a '92 and use the Crimson Trace grips, thus no rail for exterior laser or light.
