.38 s&w in a .38 spl?

Is it possible to fire .38 s&w in my (rossi mod851).38 spl? I read somewhere that .38 spl was originally called .38 s&w special. Anyway, hope this doubles my ammo choices.. thanks in advance

Looks like the 38S&W is a little fatter than the 38 Special. The S&W is .3865 & the Special is .379, BTW this is Case diameter not bullet diameter. I haven't ried it, Ive got enough 38 Special brass to last 3 lifetimes lol.
