Carbine Stocks

FYI

Boyd's has matched sets for the carbine for $80 in their limited supply listing. No metal except for the riveted flange on the handguard.

I saw that, helluva good price, IMO. Found a guy on another forum with what looks to be a Boyd's carbine stock, only without the top handguard. Brand new, $60 inc. shipping. I can get a handguard from Boyd's, or an Ultimak handguard with a rail. Hmmm, what to do, what to do.....MO is in the mail for that one.

FWIW - I have a new Boyd's M1 Garand set too, and last night I finally decided to see if the rifle would fit in it. Lo and behold, the rifle slipped right into the stock, the trigger group slid right in, and it all locked up PERFECTLY! I don't think it'll require ANY fitting of the action whatsoever!

However, there's a LOT of extra meat on the external surfaces of the stock that will definitely need to be removed. It's a lot fatter than my original stock, in a lot of places. Plus, the color of the stain is hideous, but I found that that will sand right off to nice walnut underneath. Not looking forward to making it skinnier, but I was very pleased to find out how well the action fits! Five minutes of deburring and finish sanding inside, and it'll be perfect.

But the stain....I swear they must have dipped the parts into a vat of that stain, it's in every nook and cranny. And it's NOT attractive, IMO.

.....( Snip for brevity ).....IMO.

Both of 'em?

From what I understand: Criterion is prep'ing to make Carbine barrels. I would not be surprised to see both barrels and wood sets on the CMP sales list sometime in the next couple years.

The last time I contacted CMP about carbine stocks it was indicated that ever having stock sets is slim to none. Maybe this will change.
It would be nice to find replacement barrels on CMP...let's cross our fingers.
I returned to the Boyd site after I received my stock set and, alas, they have no more.

I'm part of the reason they're out... I ordered one last week and started the finishing process last night.. A very light sanding, and the first coat of BLO was put on last night.. Very pretty wood and very solid!!!

I'll be using it for my Underwood when it's done..

I lucked out and did get my second set ordered before they ran out.
They did sell out quick so maybe they will make another run.
Sure put a new lease on life for the old shooter...the carbine, not me...
