Memory

Was talking to my brother yesterday about memory. Funny how it works. I realized that during my adult life I have moved into 6 different homes and cannot remember the phone number of any except my current home. (and previous, since its the same number) Can't remember any of the numbers when I was living alone before I got married, yet I still remember the first phone number we ever had in Azle, Texas. CE 7 3914. That was over 50 years ago. My mom told me later that we only had the phone for about 6 mos before moving, but she had all of us kids memorize the number. Anyone have a similar childhood experience ?

Sounds familiar, Tom. First phone number I memorized was my Uncle's and it was in 1948. The number was 111f25.

Another phone number I remember from 1954 was WH3-4789, my bosses number when I worked in construciton in Wichita, KS as a junior in high school during the summer.

Just don't ask my my kids current phone numbers. Or...my cell phone number. Or...any other number besides my home phone number which I've had since 1968.

That's what directories are for. I use "mental systems" for recalling useless data untill it's needed.(ha)

You know, I just realized that I'm in the same boat as FortyXDM. I can remember my home phone number from childhood - NOrwood 7-5577, and having to tell the operator what it was because the phones when I was very little didn't have dials yet - and my current home phone number, and my cellphone number; but I can't remember any of the phone numbers of any of the places I lived in between those two. How strange.

I have you beat ! ! ! Our phone number when I was a kid was 459. You could visit with the operator while she was connecting you, too. Heck, you could even go down there, walk in, and look around.

Well I'm not old enough to have had a phone number with letters in it but I do remember the number from growing up and I know my current one.
Tigercat made me think about something a friend of mine showed me.
It was on a website for Las Vegas history. It had an old map of Las Vegas. On the border it had advertisments. I think it was from the late 30's. The phone number for Yellow cab was 5.

What about the food left at the corner of your mouth after dinner. These cell phones and their memory of numbers sure doesn't help my memory!

I think when you start getting older you deliberately forget useless things to make more room in your memory. Then other very old memories survive for some reason, maybe they get imprinted. Earliest thing I can remember is riding with my dad in his truck and he started doing ice capades on an empty iced parking lot, I must have been 6.
