The Union deserved the criticism they got.

Larry is right. Unions are obsolete. They had their time and place but are now just greedy organizations.
Here's a kid trying to do some good and working toward Eagle scout no less and this jerk has to come along and minimize it.

has fox sunk so low they are reporting non stories. it was one guy who had no business making a statement. the union themselves had no part in it. In principle I agree. there are who knows how many people out of work in that area that could be paid and provide for their families. now, it's wrong to take it out on an eagle scout, but what if you're a mechanic and some kid decides to start changing transmissions for free because he enjoys it? I'm constantly having to battle producers because some kid has just finished film school and will do their movie for free or way less than my rate.

Clearing a hiking trail and changing transmissions are two completely different things. Apples and oranges in my opinion.
Whether this individual was authorized or not to make this statement he does represent the union. I have no doubt he's not the only one who thinks this way.

All unions are evil because some idiot shot his mouth off? I'm sorry, but I'm still (technically) a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers even though I receive no benefits because I stopped paying dues a couple of years ago. The union prevented my employer from walking all over us, and they tried to on a daily basis. We weren't the pampered prima dona's that everyone thinks of when they think of union workers either. A classic example was when they got a friends' job back after he was fired for not reporting back after scheduled time off. He was ON VACATION and the dispatcher failed to report that fact to the company so they fired him without even calling him to find out what was going on, then they refused to rehire him until the union stepped in on his behalf. They also kept the co. from cutting our benefits in violation of our contract.
A lot of wrong has been perpetrated by unions, but not all of them are evil or useless. If your company takes care of you and treats you well, then you don't need a union.

The best way to avoid unions is pay a fair wage and decent benefits. unions fill a need when employers are unfair. Hell, I pay enough taxes with paying my dues too, but without them I could be working 15 hours a day with no real OT.

unions become corrupt just like any large organization.

On a side note, I heard on Glenn Beck show today that the Government is considering making it mandatory that will require small businesses to give it's employees paid sick days.

Yea, with the economy like it is and with unemployment where it is and with the healthcare threatening to hurt small businesses, I'm thinking many small businesses won't be in business very long...

Falls right in line with ALL union contracts don't it?

The Union rep all ready blasted this guy and denied he had any authority to do anything regardless of what he said.

I was a proud member of the Floor Coverers Union for 5 years..I want my dues back.

There's good Unions and bad Unions.

I've never been in a Union but I see a need for them today in some jobs.

union reps are politicians. regardless of where we sit on the political spectrum I think we (here) all feel the same way about them. for every one that cares about us, 50 are using the position for their own ends.

This union rep spoke of filing a grievance over the use of volunteers to do the work of paid employees when the paid employees are being laid off due to no work. The volunteers in this case were Boy Scouts. However, the filing of a grievance is the unions way of advising their employer that using volunteers while laying off workers is not allowed by their negotiated contract. It may appear to be bad publicity, but I gaurantee everyone here would pitch a major bitch if they were laid off from their job because their employer could get the same job done for free. Hell, I know roofers who are unemployed because their employers hired illegals for less than minimum wage. Don't think for a minute those illegals would be working if those roofing companies could get Boy Scouts to roof for free.
It's all about protecting jobs. The fact that many here don't like unions when they use their strength to protect jobs is sad. Unions have done more good for workers in this country including keeping the wages for non-union workers higher also. Do they have some bad history? Maybe. But the employers in this country have alot worse track record in their abuse of employees.

Case in point. A Texas company came to Iowa and purchased a packing plant that had union representation. They fired all the workers and replaced them with mentally handicapped men from Texas and paid these men $65 per month and also kept their SSI checks, cashing them and pocketing the money.
Another NY company bought a packing plant here in Iowa, fired all the union workers and replaced them with known illegals and their children.
Both these companies have been shut down and the owners are being prosecuted. That's how employers look for ways to cut union jobs. I suppose they couldn't get anyone to do that kind of work for free huh?
