Hey guys, looking at a MN 91/30 for pretty cheap "I think" anyway its a Hex Reciever... I guess this is vs the round one but whats the difference really? is one better or more sought after?

Hex (octagonal, actually) receivers are generally more sought after for a couple of reasons, neither having to do with strength - they're earlier models and therefore more rare, (I think), and since they're on earlier models, they indicate a weapon that has a better machining and tooling job, unlike the later WWII years where they were rushed out the factory door.

Thats true. But remember this. That there were a few quality issues right after the Bolshevisk revolution. So the best rifles to buy are a few years pre- WW2
Hex Receivered M91's and 91/30's are not that uncommon. Out of 2 cases (40 rifles) that I wandered through at a local shop, most were hex receivers (maybe 30).
You can mount a scout scope fairly easily and cheaply (NC Star 2-7 x 32) by removing the rear sight mount and installing in the dovetail already there. Search this forum for instructions and mounts.

I'd hate to see one drilled and tapped. But, it is you rifle and you can always do with it what you wish. Geo is right on. Any hex receiver model that is made before the war will have to have the rear sight removed with some heat, it is soldered in place. There may also be a set screw too. But an long eye relief scope won't require a bent bolt. It just takes a little getting used to. Mine shoots great on my 1943 Izhevsk 91/30.

the after 1936 i think the reciever was rounded to speed up production, who knows what else less noticeable things they skimped on to get more in the hands of soldiers. the hex recieved are in general better made. the difference in quality is probably not even noticeable though with most except for a couple production years like 1941-1943. my 1943 tula ex-sniper reciever looks like it was rounded by hand with a file the machineing is so bad
