Joining the Fray!

Hi all,

I took the plunge today and put money down on a PTR-91 FC. I got what I think is a pretty good deal, $1,000 and I see that elsewhere they are listed at $1,250.

I am planning on paying off the rest tomorrow and taking it home. I will be going to the range on Saturday to put it through its paces and then I am sure I will be scratching my head trying to figure out how to take the thing apart and, more importantly, put it back together.

This is my first entry into the G3 type rifles and I hope it will be a good one.

The more you shoot it the better you will like it.

Hopefully I won't have any of those dreaded finicky PTR problems I have heard about. *fingers crossed

Sprout, head on over to The CETME G3 Information Page for some PDF manuals and a decent amount of info. Unfortunately, the link to The CETME Page on that page is dead, due to Yahoo shutting down Geocities.

The CETME G3 takedown is not too bad. I hope you like it. BTW, not a bad deal either.

Ya I just got back a little bit ago and decided to get "familiar" with my new rifle...

Ran into my first snag. The got pushed back, in the cocked position?, and I can't get it to go forward again...

Sigh...

Figured it out finally, the little locking thing on the top. The manual was telling me to squeeze the rollers in to make it go forward. Maybe this need to be worked out on the range more but they must have some strong fingers lol.

Here she is.

Came with the standard Plano hard case, nothing fancy but saves me from having to run out and buy a case.

Thank you sir!

I sure hope I didn't get one of the lemons I read about on HKPro :O

Course, hard to tell how much of that is user related issues.

Ptr-91

I've had my F model for almost six months now. I've collected a collapsible stock, extra G3 stock, spare PTR Forend, @ 40 magazines, a scope mount, and have yet to fire a shot!!!
I gotta get out to the range!!

I have a CETME from Century that I bought used, and don't regret it! I haven't had the first problem with it. I even mounted a scope on it with a SWAT mount, bought some 5rd mags and use it for deer hunting. You should see some of the looks I get around the hunting camps. LOL!!!! Great fun!!! Congrats on your new rifle and welcome to the world of Spanish battle rifles!

Man that was a let down...

Went to the range with the new rifle and fired off about 100 rounds without a hiccup then I started to get FTE every around. I fired about 5-rounds that were FTE and decided to take it home.

I had read that this is a problem with certain types of ammo. So I figured I got a lemon. Well I did, sort of. I took down the rifle to clean and upon removing the bolt from the bolt carrier the bolt crumbled. Almost half of the bolt and broken off and was being held together by the force the extractor was putting on it.

Well I guess I am going back to the gun shop tomorrow...

SOB

This is just another reason why I will never get rid of my AK's lol

Ya... I am a little bummed at the moment. I see that new bolt heads run for 195 bucks for an H&K one.

I hope this is not a common happening for these rifles.

Here are some pics of the bolt head. I think I am just lucky at this point that I didn't get injured in the process lol. (actually more injured, I took a good chunk out of a finger when putting the buffer/stock back on, OUCH!!!).

I bought a new bolt for my CETME, it was $35. It was worth it to me to just replace the part, as sending it back and forth would eat up a lot of my time and I'd rather just shoot the darn thing. Everything else was in spec.

If I could find one that cheap I may think about it. Where did you get that from? And did you have one break as well?

I am just a little concerned that something else may be eff'd up now. I am hoping that if I bring it back to the shop I got it that they will just let me grab the other one they had there. Not likely, but hey, anything is possible!

***UPDATE***

I got a hold of PTR this morning.

I was told that they never had that happen before, which Google confirms this as the only case I could find. They apologized and said that they would take care of it and get it fixed and inspect the rest of the rifle for me. I forgot to ask about how long the turn-around would be but I think it is safe to say that I won't be using this as a deer rifle this season.

They gave me a RA # and I have to say that I was pretty pleased with how they handled this thus far, I will wait till I get my rifle back before I make any final assessment. Never once did they even hint that it could have been caused by something I did and they blamed the part suggesting that while they Rockwell test their parts it could have been either a stress fracture that made it past QC or even that it was tempered improperly.

So +1 for PTR's handling of my request for repairs. They also said that if anything else was damaged, as there was a chunk of metal missing that had to have gone somewhere, that they would either make the needed repairs or send me a new rifle. Also, I will not have to bother with having it sent back to my FFL, they said the ATF authorizes them to ship firearms to non-FFL holders when the rifle is being sent back from repair.

I will keep this thread updated as it goes.

WOW Sprout!!!.... that failure is epic. Just like you've said, I've never seen anything like it.

I'm really glad to hear PTR is taking good care of you.

...and yes, please keep us updated. That's one gorgeous rifle you got there... and I'm very jealous of the plastic Navy lower receiver you have on it as opposed to the all-steel one on my CETME. I'm guessing that probably cuts at least half a pound off the weight of the rifle.

Called PTR today to make sure they received my rifle; they told me it was already repaired and was sent out today and I should be getting it back in about 3-Days

Hopefully I get it before the weekend, if so I will take it out to the range and a report will follow.
