Damn....

Not sure if this is the right place...but anyway...

I took my remingtion 597 apart, for a good cleaning. This was the 4th time I have took it completely down, but this time when I put it back together the hex screw, threads stripped in the reciever (screw closest to the trigger). The screw will come out but when I go to tighten it up it just spins....

Can I have someone just put a heli-coil in there and be done with it? Or is this a real problem?

You could have it tapped to a larger size.

Just put the heli-coil in yourself. It's not hard to do.

Just get the right sized heli-coil and follow the directions...Basically just drill it out and tap it (remember to watch getting any metal shavings in the trigger/receiver area, and clean those areas out anyhow), insert the heli-coil, then put the screw back in...Wa-La.

Helloooooooooooo You're advocating a do it yourself helicoil job to someone who has just stripped a screw thread????????????????? I think not.

My original question should have been, why have you taken it apart 4 times ?? I have a Marlin M60 that's never been apart, ever !! Stripping a screw is easily done if you're not paying attention and using gunsmith screwdrivers. While I've never used a helicoil, I guess they work.

I doubt if you can readily find a HeliCoil that small. Try this before resorting to potentially damaging procedures:

If done correctly, this works well as long as you don't overwork the new threads.

While you can buy the small Heli-Coil kits they are very spendy. I would do what toolman recommended, otherwise take it to a gunsmith.
