from my experience you have steel and brass. Depending on where you get steel they could be hard to "I'll just load 1 at a time thanks" to load with. Brass, being softer, is easier buuuut they won't last as long. I use Ebay for brass and Cheaper Than Dirt - America's Ultimate Shooting Sports Discounter for steel. Buy a little of each and see what you prefer.
I agree with you toaster. I load my M39 1 round at a time no problems. I just do'nt see the need for them. No one is shooting back at me either. Besides the money I save on not buying clips I can spend on more ammo!
I think you need to pay attention to the manner in which he holds the top round. By lifting it the way he does he makes certain that the rim of the top round is ahead of the rim of the round beneath it. The interrupter will take it from there.
lifting the top round like that will let you know if you're loading them right side up. load clips with each rounds shoulder ahead of the one below it and know which end is up.
lifting the top bullet as you push near the base with your thumb, puts the leverage at the base of the bullets, in the clip, where the pressure needs to be to get them out of the clip and into the mag well. it really does make a big difference with these rimmed cartridges. ever load a .303 brit or a k-31? without the rims, they load like butter.
the other problem with mosin strippers is that it seems most of the war-time rifles weren't machined wide enough at the slot the strippers fit into to let them work right. if a loaded clip slides right into the slot with little resistance they work fine. if it doesn't bottom out without having to push the clip, you're most likely gonna have problems.
another thing is some clips have sharp edges that can catch the rounds as they try to slide out adding to the problem of a tight reciever. if the clips are smooth and fit the receiver loaded, you're golden. i little filing with a very small file can do wonders for clips with sharp edges. not to mention saving your thumb.
i've played around with these thing quite a bit and have had mixed results. some rifles just won't take them. some will with some work on the clips. some love them just as they are. the ones that do like them as is, are usually the m39's. another thing the finns gave more thought about than the russian, i guess.

I've had decent results loading the rounds so the first rim is against the back of the stripper clip, the next with its rim ahead of the first, the third with its rim against the back of the clip, etc., so I end up with Nos. 1, 3 and 5 against the rear of the clip and Nos. 2 and 4 with the rims ahead of the odd-numbered rounds' rims.
As for buying them, I've bought them on eBay, from private parties and from Gunbroker.com. Some of them work with all my Mosins, other only with certain ones. It's true they aren't essential to using a Mosin on the range or for hunting, but they make life a lot easier.
I bought some from this guy... after poking around a bit on eBay, his prices were pretty good
got them less to USE AND USE AND USE, and more for "this is the authentic way to load the magazine" and use them occasionally. At my indoor range, I can load out of the box right off a table, but this gives me the opportunity at an outdoor range to use ammo pouches etc etc...
These are the ones I bought and don't have any problems with them in any of the nagants I have (including my buddies nagants). They are a little pricey though!

I bought a few awhile ago, but i scoped my M91/30 and I can't use the clips and my M38 is testy and doesn't like the clips, so i don't even bother to use them. The up side is, I've hand reloaded the mag so many times i can load 5 faster by hand than using a clip.

If the clip works then you can't reload faster than with a clip (unless you count loading the clips in advance)....
Did lots of loading of M16 clips in the army... the clips were always faster, but only if the clips were preloaded.
