so, here I am. A possible 'liberal' (in the sense that I believe in individual liberties). and yet I find myself supporting the militia movement (not the federal building bomb making loons). Yes, I acknowledge all government is fascist, yet I'm not afraid of them.
I used to wonder what the founding fathers and framers of the constitution would make of modern assault weapon. I found it hard to justify civilians owning military weapons to the people I know who don't own guns.
I've just been reading the constitution, from what I understand the 2nd amendment is there to allow us (the people) to defend our selves from the government. this means we would be expected to use the same grade of weapon as the government forces. I also understood it that the constitution only covers federal government not state law, (i haven't finished yet, I'm on the 6th amendment).

The militia's / patriots have to convince joe public that they are not extremists/ christian talliban. but people who believe in individual freedom. Even freedoms they don't like.

You are finding the reason(s) that the Framers were concerned about. Skip the scholars and read it as written. Add nothing in, and take nothing away, you will be amazed at how brilliant their foresight was !!

Skip all the rhetoric, jump over the BS, and you can begin to see where I lay !!

I think the intent of the folks that wrote our constitution was that the people were to be allowed to have the same kind of rifles that the government troops have.
It seems to work just fine for the Swiss.
What kind of mind set do they have that we don't?

I have been involved in the militia movement since the early 80's. have held darn near every position or rank ranging from a grunt to the head honcho , in my experience some militias are made up of idiots that had watched one to many war movies and others were well informed educated americans from every walk of life that are interested in personal security and protecting our freedoms. in those groups we looked upon ourselves as americas last line of defense (not really coming into play unless federal and local authorities have failed) When I ran the NSU Militia (National Survival Unit ) we were so low profile that we joked that NSU stood for "no such unit" that was interesting becouse the NSU was represented in all 50 states. My personal belief on the matter is that if you are a armed american citizen and believe in our constitution " YOU ARE THE MILITIA "

Talking Don't Tread on Me!

Petrol, Sounds to me like you're a libertarian as opposed to a liberal. You're living in the wrong state!

Far better to avoid Militia groups...most of 'em are FUBAR anyway.

Best thing to do, just be a typical survivalist...without letting anyone local know that's what you are.

"In the first five months of Obama's presidency, racist, right-wing extremists killed at least nine people," according to Chip Berlet, senior analyst with Political Research Associates, a Somerville, Mass., think tank.

Yeah and how many crackdealing racist thugs that love Obama killed people in that same time frame? Always have to make the Patriots look like the bad guys.
