Range day

I got the M-44 out today for some fun at the range
it was shooting pretty good, my surplus albanian went into 3" at a hundred yards, and my handloads with the nosler BTs were about 2.5". all in all not a bad day. then my ncstar LER started the wandering zero that i hear so much about i've decided that since this is gonna be a sporting rifle, i'm gonna get a real mount and scope on it, and i'm wanting one of the laminate stocks that boyd's makes.
There were a couple of AR guys there, and a guy sighting in his .308.....i woke everybody up with the first round down the tube
Jaws dropped at the noise and fire coming out of my wood stocked naval gun

then my 18 year old daughter got ahold of it and wouldn't turn loose, she had everyone watching her cycle a couple of magazines through the 44.

Needless to say, between the M-44, a ruger single six and a knight blackpowder rifle, we had a blast (pun intended)

next to last shot out the mosin, i felt a breeze rush past my face and smoke rolled out of the reciever. I picked up the brass and this is what i saw

Sounds like you had fun at the range today then. What kind of mount do you have for your LER scope? Was that a reload that split the case?

nope, genuine albanian milsurp, headstamped 90 over 3.

my reloads held up just fine, but they were in S&B brass.

i've got a cheapo rail mount on the rear sight base, but it's tight.
it's held up fine for the last 2 years. i couldnt get the windage to readjust, it went far left and now the scope is rattling. what can you expect for a $50 scope?

i really think i want to go back to irons on this rifle, maybe a modified rear sight leaf.
as far as the scope mount goes, i want something that will allow me to keep the irons on the rifle and use them if the scope breaks.
i don't know if the ATI mount will allow this.

looks about right for Alby....i've had a few split necks but nothing this drastic.
the smoke that poured out smelled like burnt cosmo, must have missed some

at least i didn't have the same problem i had with my blackpowder rifle, that would have been spooky.
the gun fired when my daughter closed the bolt

You can see in the pics of my unfired rounds that the necks are already split. I went through the next 20 and got the necked one and an ok one but that creased one came from the first lot... I wish i had a choice other than Albanian coz quality control looks crap.
By the looks of those rounds i have looked at i reckon they look badly loaded. i almost wonder if they had been reloaded by the factory...

i'd say if anything that the brass was brittle when they made them.
i had about 20 rounds out of this lot that i pulled down because of split necks. but then again i only gave $30 for 33o rounds so i'm not really complaining.

over here in Australia i'm stil paying 50 cents a shot to play with mil surp. Better than $1.05 for commercial.

I have undoubtably fired the split necks so i will continue to do so... But that creased one sure isn't. I have fired one that was creased but no way near as badly. it was when i noticed the ejected case that i went through the package.

Do you or can you reload? I think it was costing me under a quarter a round to do so.

Sounds like quite a day! Well there's alot to comment on in your post ottawa rogue, i thought i would just say that i just read a article in the
January issue of GUNS magazine about affordable scopes by John Barsness. He believes the fullfield II tactical 3-9x40 made by Burris for
$456 is as good or better than scopes costing $1000 or more. He says the same about all the Fullfield II scopes. For me $456 is more than i can afford but just thot I'd pass his experience on to you. I know that any permanent mods to our historical firearms can be extremely controversial but if you intend on going the drill and tapped receiver route IMHO the Rock Solid brand mount i installed on my first
Mosin Nagant 1942 Izzy 91/30 is truly absolutely solid as a rock [no pun intended] but having said that i wanted another MN with no mods so bad after that i had trouble going to sleep until i got one [twins BTW except no counter bore]. Now having done all that i wish i would have gotten one
genuine sniper rifle BUT the first rifle was a present and the second rifle
was a trade so there was no plan. I'll now stop rambling.

I'm getting enough gear together to afford to do it. Ex has been given a press, i will need to get a head for it. Super Simplex i believe it is. And of course the dies... Even brass is hard to come buy so it means buying some Prvi whenever i can and the last time i went to the store in Sydney that sells it, he was still out... No where local sells the damned stuff.

it lasted about 150 rounds roughly. I'm gonna go back out to the range in a couple of weeks and see if it can be brought back into zero, i got it pulled back into line last night and it stopped rattling

But why would I put a $456 scope on my $69.95 rifle? Not to mention the cost of a scope mount.

ya, that's part of the reason i went with the scout mount, less that $75 in the whole setup.

kind of like a guy who puts a $2000 stereo in a $200 car

Ottawa- Take a look at a MOJO rear peep for your irons. I love them.

i might just do that steve, but i'd really like to look at a set on a rifle before i buy one.
if nothing else, i'll order a new rear sight leaf and modify the groove in it to be able to use it, my old one had such a tiny notch in it that i almost needed the scope to see it

what i'm thinking of is a side bracket mount that will allow me to keep and use the irons if need be, something like a weaver #1 mount
