Woman Hides In Closet As Armed Robbers Enter Home

POSTED: 5:02 p.m. EST January 22, 2003

A woman's quick thinking during a home invasion in Palm Bay may have saved her life and it definitely helped police catch the criminals. It all began when she heard a strange knock at the door. She saw some strange men standing outside, so she ran to her room and, as she was calling police, the crooks came back.

Caller: "They're inside my house."
911 Dispatch: "You can hear them walking around?"
Caller: "Three of them."
911 Dispatch: "Stay on the phone with me honey. We've got officers on the way to you."

Christine Rayes was on her knees inside this closet, clutching a telephone and whispering to a Palm Bay police dispatcher. "I was about losing my breath. She keep me breathing because I could have fainted," says Rayes.

Christine says she stayed at home so she could clean up the mess left behind by the robbers yesterday. They busted through a sliding glass door. She was waiting for a serviceman to arrive, but the robbers got there first.

"How dare they come back! That was going through my mind, hoping they didn't pull the door down and something bad happen to me," says Rayes.

Three minutes after her call began, police were running down the suspects. They say they caught two of them and two more are still on the loose.

Officers say one of the suspects had a large knife. Although they probably never knew she was hiding in the closet, they're still charged with home invasion as well as armed burglary.

Rewarding Cowardice?

Howdy,

I suppose in this situation this was the best thing she could have done,

But what if they had opened the door or heard her whispering? These guys were pretty bold to return one day later.

Personally, I would not trust my fate to chance. Momma and kids in the closet, dad's going hunting! Oh, and momma would have had the cell phone and a big ol 12 guage auto loaded for bear!

They can't come back a third time, or injure nayone if they are properly ventilated you know.....about a dozen .40acp holes would do nicely....

Gotta remember this lady has been raised as a good non-violent Liberal. Would you want her to have a gun in hand, being this freaked out? It certainly should be the homeowners' choice, but it worked out the best for her.
Her first priority should be - get rid of that danged Sliding Glass Door! Easy way in for a criminal. Then get a dog. A little common sense up front would have prevented this nonsense.

Sounds like it worked out but she would be better off with a little heat in that closet to go with that phone.
