I went to purchase my first handgun today (Springfield XDM .40) and after I filled out the background check and everything I was told they put a hold on my application. I was told I would be contacted (by my local dealer) within 7 days to tell me whether I was accepted or denied, and that if I didn't hear back within 7 days they had the right to sell the gun to me. I have a clean record. What is this hold for?
Your Name may be close to a denied person and they will do a more thorough check , I Think they just do it to people when they are overloaded at the FBI NICS center...sometimes , especially when it is a Handgun...
You are at their Mercy...

They told me it wasn't an uncommon thing and that they would probably be calling me in the morning to come back and pick it up, but it just sucked that I was ready to make my first purchase and went home with nothing. On another note they are throwing in an TLR-3 Mini Tactical Light. Don't know much about them at all... Pros Cons?

From what I gather this is not totally unusual. I had an experience similar to that a while ago... I bought a gun at a gun show in Ft. Worth, later in the day my dad (same name) bought a gun at Cabellas in Ft. Worth, then that afternoon I saw another gun I had to have at Bass Pro in Grapevine, TX. I had bought several firearms before that without incident, and have a spotless background. I was told at Bass Pro that my background check said to put the sale on hold, and I'd be contacted in the next few days with either a rejection or go-ahead.
They wouldn't or couldn't tell me why, but the employee said off the record the most likely cause was that my name was similar to someone that raised a flag.
24 hours later they called me up and said I was good to go... didn't know why it was held up, or eventually approved, but I was welcome to come in and pick up my gun.
I subsequently have made several purchases with a CHL, where no background check was done... so if you really want to streamline the process (and for several other much better reasons), pick yourself up a CHL and it will be smooth sailing.
I had same thing happen to me about a year ago. Same dealer I get all my guns shipped to. He called me 2 days later and told me to come in FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) transposed one of the digits in my SS #. The number they put in the computer for me a 40, at the time, year old man came up as a 26 year old woman. If your record is clean it was probably a simple mistake.
Hey cordesn,
I live in st. louis mo. myself and it happened to me also . I have bought several guns before and went to pick up one from my FFl dealer and was rejected one time also .
He said it wasn't that uncommon for it to happen . He said he had seen police officers get turned down too .He said it could take up to seven days . He called me the next day and told me to come pick it up that it cleared and all was good to go .
I thought it was kinda odd but who knows ....! I have bought more than one gun since then and it hasn't happened again . Only that one time . Of course all my buddies kidded me that I had been flagged by big brother for being a gunnut and buying to many .....LOL!
It was worth the xtra day wait as it turned out to be one of the best deals I have ever gotten on a gun . .32S&W H&R top break , nickel, original box ,and almost cherry condition .

As already posted, depends on where you live. Before I got my CHL, they called & got an answer right on the spot & I walked out with my pistol. Since I got my CHL, they don't have to call.
Well, hopefully you get approved. In CO if we pass the check for a handgun, we can purchase as many as we want on that day, long guns included. If approved for long gun, we can purchase additional long guns on that day.
Just a thought, if MO is similar and your check is approved you might want to make another purchase (hunting rifle or shotgun). Just in case you get a hankering to go hunting.
Every one on this site knows what it is called. It is the "Cool Down Period" so you don't go out and buy a gun in a mad terror and want to smoke somebody with it. Agree or disagree - some states have it, others don't ...we don't. With a CCP you walk in, plunk down the dough, fill out the one sheet and walk out with it. No CCP - walk in, plunk down the dough, fill out the sheet, one phone call and then walk out with it. I have never seen anyone turned down.
I just transferred a car and title to someone else. Went to the DMV, was called as soon as the number spit out. Gave them a few bucks to xfer, signed over the paperwork. They NEVER asked to see my ID or to inspect the car or VIN. Didn't even look at my DL. Gotta luv these red-neck states.

Check out How Many of Me and see how many people in the US have the same name as you. If it's a lot, the chances are good that one of those people has done something naughty and delayed your purchase. The site's not entirely accurate, since it doesn't take middle names into account but it's a good illustration. I'm lucky; there are only 9 people with my name and I get approved fast.

The whole name-close-to-someone-else thing is why, little as I like to do it, I always put my Social Security number down on the Form 4473. Yes, it means if the yankee gummint ever decides to start retaining the application/sales records the way they are allegedly not doing at present (I am just skeptical about that claim, especially with an administration loaded with anti-gunners), they will be able to learn in very short order what I own. However, it also means I won't be mixed up with someone who might have a similar name, because SSNs are unique and will remain so for a long time to come. The potential quantity of numbers is in the trillions, I think.
It's a very quick way for the NICS people to differentiate between people, so I put up with my misgivings and continue to use it on the form. I've never had a problem with a NICS check anyhow. Generally, anyone who has both a pistol permit and a Class 03 C&R license is considered not to be a risk by NICS because our background checks for the two licenses are on record.

I did that test in the link...I am the ONLY person in the U.S. with my name. I now know why I get approved almost instantly. I have a commonish first name...and my last name is common, but we spell it oddly...so I am unique in America...if that website is accurate.

Yes, it is a "cool down" thing partly. But it can also be the name thing. I have a friend who is Mexican, born in Cal., who has a much used Latino name. My friend is an A#1 citizen and a great guy, but having the name he does, he always has a problem with the background check. But he recently got his CCW license; that goes a long way toward clearing any problems.

I say! I've been looking for a similar gun, only in 38 cal, for ever. Finding one is no problem; finding one in the condition yours is in is a big problem. Enjoy that little feller! There's just something about the looks of this type revolver that appeals to me.
