If you want a smaller pattern you need a different choke. Im not shure if you can remove your choke but my 870 you can. I dont know if that helps with your question?

Well,

I'm a bit confused by your post.

Shot comes in a number of differing sizes. Shotgun shells can be had in various lengths and sometimes differing powers between shells of the same length.

Various chokes will either allow for a more open pattern at shorter range or a more constricted pattern at longer ranges.

So, a number of factors come into play. It is best that you choose the shell and shot size with which you wish to shoot and then see how it spreads at various ranges which is called patterning.

Nathan is right about trying several different brands/loads to find what works in your gun.I make an 18"circle on cardboard and try to get 60% in the circle at 40yds.Some brands go over, some under. An awful lot of pattern is controlled by what kind of shot cup the mfg uses.If he uses one that blasts into the shot column right after exiting the muzzle you are going to have a lousy pattern. If the shotcup holds the shot togather for a little ways and then drops off you will have a much better pattern.Try different brands until you can get up to 75% in the circle at 40yds.To save money, once you find a brand that patterns good, stick with it and buy when it is on sale. ,,,sam.

You should be ashamed because you always pick the impossible to answer. The problem is about the time you find one that works, they change it.Any MFG may use multiple different shotcups.Winchester is terrible for this. Some use reenforced petals and turn around and use the flimsy ones that open quickly. In reloading the ones with the reenforced wing works best for me. ,,,sam.

Thumbs up

Inexpensive method for "patterning" a shotgun:

Cut several sheets of large paper (at least 3 ft x 3 ft)

Put sheets out in front of you about 50 ft +/-

Take one shot at each piece of paper using a specific choke setting.(note) Aim at the same spot each time without allowing for wind, etc.)

Mark each sheet after it was shot with the gun used, choke setting, date, est. wind, etc.

Examine and compare each sheet to see where the holes were.

That should give you a rough idea of what your gun does with different choke settings.

---------

Then you could do the same with using different brands of ammo. Compare them to see the results.

Good luck,

Ox

If you follow Oxfords method and use your own multiple brands, you will find what works best. The more restriction in the choke, the tighter the pattern. ,,,sam.

will end up looking like this
Depending on shot size and type, tighter choke does not always mean tighter or more uniform patterns. this is especially true with larger steel shot, a modified may perform like a full with steel etc.. You just gotta lay the pellets to the paper to know as stated.

That may be your experience Jerry, but mine in two settings is,I always heard 00buck didn't tattern as well from a full choke as a modified. That is absolutely wrong. The full will be the tightest pattern.,,,I had always felt that restricting shot from full (694") down to turkey size,(.665") would have to blow pattern.Boy was I wrong! ,,,sam.

Right, just depends on the gun, choke, load, and sometimes shooter.
