Whitetail 30/30 or slug

I am hunting a small 50 acre peice of property for whitetail deer. There are houses near 2 sides of it.I would be shooting away from the houses for sure and was wondering what gun would be safer or better to use.Marlin 30/30 with scope or a 12 or 20 gauge slug.Longest shot might be 75 yards but more likely 50.How about the noise?Which one has more of a BANG?I could also use either my Mosin Nagant or 270 but I think either would be an overkill.Any suggestions would be very helpfull.

Personally, I'd opt for the .30-30 because of the potential meat loss with a slug, plus I prefer the quick handling of a lever-gun.

if you will be in a stand go with the scoped .30-30. if you will be on the ground whatever you have with open sights will be best, id go 12 over 20,
but thats just me. actually i might take the mosin regardless, assuming you dont have that wearin a scope.

I would opt for the 30-30. Quieter than the mosin and more accurate than a slug.

I was leaning toward the 30/30 myself because of the Redfeild scope and see thru mounts.

When hunting near buildings, I would hunt from a stand. That way you have the ground as a backstop. I would use my 30-30. The 12 gauge is a real stopper, but if you can't place the slug in the right spot it's not as good as a well placed shot from the 30-30. Hope this helps.

I'm a rifleman but think this one is a tossup if the 12ga is accurate.Past 75yds it's the .30-30 all the way.And by the way, whoever said a shotgun was rougher on meat never saw many exit wounds from a .30-30 at 150 and under yds. ,,,sam.

Well,

I do understand the views of others but I just wish to add I feel this would be a perfect scenario for my 20 gauge rifled slug gun.

I have a Rossi single shot that I have scoped and it is extremely good
at the 50 to 75 yard range.

Being stuck in a slug gun state, i wouldn't limit my self to the slug fest if I had a choice. Propper back stop as mentioned. Being elevated helps alot in that regards as mentioned also. At the end of the day either will get the job done.

Yeah your right Sam, the person that says bigger ruins more meat dont know how well the bigger slugs work. The bullets that fly fast give what they call hydrostatic shock, Weatherby was a huge suporter of this. Thus, he made fast whiz bang rifles that blood shoot meat, thinking that velocity is what kills better.Thats not entirely true.As long as you stick a hole through there vitals say a lung or heart thats whats gonna kill them.Plus the bigger calibers bring more punch delivering me energy to the target. The slower the bullet the less ruined meet you will have. If you are accurate with the slug guns i would use them. I woud rather know that when i hit the animal he will most likely drop in his tracks. with being hit from a slug thats almost a guarantee.

Same here.. When hunting in slug territory, I use my smoothbore Remington 870 in 20 gauge, or a modern muzzleloader..
