The Marlin will require a wee bit of trigger work..but it only takes an hour the first time you do it, afterwards, you'll get it down to 10 minutes because you'll have done it to ever rifle, pistol & shotgun in your safe.

Just a wee bit of careful hand-polishing...and a wee bit of metal polish at the end.

I've got a Marlin 981 T and I like it. I have'nt shot it much though to see what it's capable of.
Mine has the Classic style synthectic stock. I also have the 983 T 22 magnum.

These rifles are heavy duty and well made for what you pay for them. I've been studying up some on the Savages which seem to be equal in everyway to the Marlins.
I like the accu-trigger Savage is putting on there 22's so I'd handle both of them if I were you before you buy though the Savage want shoot shorts.

i own a savage mkII and i wouldnt buy another. it os only passably accurate out of the box. with the ammo it liked best it will shoot 1 1/2" at 50 yards with a scope and bipod. my next rimfire is going to be a marlin,
unless i want to put down serious cash, in witch case i would consider a higher end savage target model.

That's what Insurance is for

Shouldn't the brush guard/push bar/winch bumper have prevented any major damage??
