I am thinking of getting a new bolt action .22LR after the holidays but am not sure which one I want. I don't have a lot of money and am thinking either the Savage MKII or the Marlin 981T. I am kind of leaning towards the Marlin because it says it will shoot .22 shorts and if I want to use it for trapping then that will come in handy. What is everyones opinion and experience with the two rifles.

I have had the Marlin for about 15 years...it is a great gun...shot many limb rats in PA

Geez, why don't you ask me to pick a favorite kid. I prefer Savage, but mostly because thats what my grand-dad shot. They are both great guns, if it were me I'd look for the best deal. Whichever gun you find the best deal on first!

Marlin wins dang near everytime on precision
The only downside to buying a Marlin is that they become addictive and you end up with a half-dozen in the safe after a few years...it's like they get in there and multiply like bunnies!!

they are each a quality gun. I would advise handling them then choosing what "fits" you best in terms of trigger pull, stock to your body and arm length, balance, pointability, and so on.

981T is quite prevalent amongst our group of shooters. Great shooter out of the box and it has a better finish than savage.

I favor the Marlins, but the Savages are equally good. I agree - handle both and see which you prefer! You can't go wrong with either.

what could be the difference? if the chamber is cut for long rifle on both guns, why wouldnt a short fit in either? oh, maybe they won't function thru the magazine.

They will not feed into the chamber via the clip or tube feed mechanism......

Well..looks like the majority says Marlin which is what I was leaning towards anyways. Plus I don't have to worry about remembering the clip if I go anywheres. I am going to get a price from my dealer tomorrow on both but I am pretty sure I am going with the Marlin.

I have the savage and love it, it got moved up to truck gun. I have shot it in comparison with many others and none add up. mine is the fv, the tube on the marlin is nice (my son has one) but after firing the savage the trigger on the marlin feels like the pull is at about 26 lbs.

Get both. I say any excuse to get more guns is a good excuse!

If you want it to feed shorts, go with the Marlin tube repeater. I was shooting LRs the day of the picture below but it fed shorts quite well when I tried a box or two a couple of months ago: |
