thoughts on new tumbler

This morning I loaded up the old Lyman Turbo 1200 tumbler and went to turn it on and it just hummed. I see nothing wrong with the motor and it doesn't smell burnt or anything so it must be windings are shorted. Till I can find a motor (or rewind the old one) for the not all that much used 1200 I plan on buying another tumbler. Has anyone tried the Harbor Freight (as we call it Harbor Salvage) 5lb tumbler. Since probably all of the tumbers being sold these days come from asia and the HF is about 1/2 the cost of a name brand of the same size I am considering it. That and I can make a 30ish mile side trip today and pick one up.

Thoughts? Ideas?

thanks tim

Get the big Dillon and their media sifter. You won't regret it.

I've got the Cabela's tumbler kit and it came with a strainer and media for around 60.00. Had it for three years, it has done well.

I have one from midway and a lyman from e-bay both were cheap one has walnut the other corncob. But as to dillon i own many of their other products and they have the best warranty there is I had a beam scale for a couple years broke it due to my own fault sent it back and they sent a new one no questions asked. You do have to call and get a number to send it in is all.

I use a Frankford Arsenal which is similar to the HF unit. FWIW, I believe mine was a bit cheaper than HF from my local gunshop. Look on eBay. I also second the Cabela's tumbler.

I have the Harbor Freight tumbler and I have had no problems with it. I have been using the HF tumbler since May, and in that time have loaded about 3,000 rounds (I keep a log). All of those have gone through the tumbler, plus a couple thousand more that I have either traded or tumbled for friends. So far I am very pleased.

Does anyone else have an actual tumbler as opposed to a vibratory shaker? I mean one with a rotating drum, not a chamber that shakes up and down. I use a Lortone tumbler that is intended to polish rocks.

Yup, I've got a Thumbler's Tumbler, a hexagonal drum tumbler for polishing rocks. Had it for 20 plus years & it's still going strong.

Tumbler

I bought mine a few weeks ago at Harber Frieght, They had one for $100 + and one for $50 I bought the $50. After a mistake on the media I bought corn cob media at Wal-Mart pet center on the advice of the guy's here on the board. It works great.

Not a whale of a lot of difference between vib. tumblers. A plastic bowl, a plastic base, a few springs, a cheap electric motor and a power cord. There's not much point in spending a lot on one.

That looks like a Chinese rip-off of the Lee Classic Cast. Heard about it, first one I've seen.

"HOW DO YOU LIKE THE GREAT CHANGE?"

Didn't expect to like it. Don't like it.

I once asked an "independant" friend who planned to vote for "change", "What do you expect to see changed?" He had a half dozen things he was sure would change, all great but airy touchy-feely liberal things. Now he sees that he was only projecting his hopes into the vague promises and flowery language. He's disappointed, BADLY!

Actually that one is the size of the challenger. It is a steel press and uses from what I can tell the old challenger links. The one that is made like the LCC is this one. Graf & Sons - SMARTRELOADER PRESS MARK XVI SINGLE-STAGE You'll notice the ram is only 1.00" in diameter. In Europe it comes with the Hornady LNL kit.

If you decide to spend enough to get a Dillon you might as well buy a Thumler. Thumler's Tumblers : Cabela's The Thumler is, was, and will probably always be the best brass tumbler made. It's the Ohaus of tumblers.

I feel vindicated now Jimkim. I thought I was the only one in the world who had one of these things. Bought mine many moons ago and it's given sterling service.

Allas I don't own one.....yet. I'm hoping to get one when things improve. My friend Roy has one HE CLAIMS to have bought in the 1960's. I'm thinking he got it in the seventies, but see no reason to argue. At any rate, it still works better than anything I've EVER seen. A job that normally takes three hours with his Lyman he is done in an hour with it. For now I will continue to use my Frankford Arsenal and look forward to better times.

By the way Billy has a Thumler too.

My rock tumbler was purchased in the late 60's. It still works fine, too. Have you tried tumbling the cases wet? I never did, but with my rock tumbler, I could. I just wonder if it would work better or faster, kind of like wet sanding a car for a finer finish.

I've done them wet with a product called 'Micro' cleaner, normally used for laboratory glass. Haven't used it for ages since my sister changed jobs. (She used to work in a big industrial lab).

EDIT: This is the stuff I was on about, it's pretty damn good at cleaning up dirty brass, just make up a solution, dump the cases in overnight and by morning they are gleaming.
